I got the Slim PS2(V12) and had it for 2 years already. My brother was playing Smackdown vs. Raw 2007 and all of sudden, the game wouldnt load. I tried Bully and other new games, it wont load either, it'll just say "reading disc" at the browser and the disc wasn't spinning when I open the flip cover. The PS2 Network Setup disc and PSX games would load. I'm thinking about buying a new laser from ebay. Should I replace the laser? Thanks in advance.

yeah sounds like a laser problem. how much are they selling replacement lasers on ebay? i got a new ps2 v13 slim silver version for 130 bucks at microcenter. maybe its time to invest in a new system, or just wait and buy a ps3.

well before you go out and buy a new laser try to fix it.
1. if the network setup disc loads when it may not be a dead laser
2. If you installed a fliptop or a set of keys (modded system) they would be the first thing i would check. If they are not installed right or somehow got a bit off over time that could cause read errors.
3. try cleaning your laser
4. i have not found any guides yet on the net, but if you can find one that tells you how to adjust your laser that would be something i would try to.

if it is something simple you can save yourself some money.
If you do get a laser make sure it is the correct one for your model number.

I HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM.
What mostly works is try to pressure a bit on the disc tray (where three knots CLICK in the middle) after setting disc in the console.
try to push the cover making sure it is perfectly seated (while in STAND BY)
These tricks work most ussually on my V12 SLIM
