Does manufacturing date matter?

I apologize for asking such a noob question, but I searched and couldn?t find a current answer. I am buying a 360 today and I plan to do a firmware mod so that I can play back-ups of my games. Should I look for a particular date or date range? I have been told that I must get something manufactured before 7/2006, but on this forum I am seeing that 78?s are being modded successfully.

Are there any real advantages to buying a box with a more currrent date (runs quieter, cooler, more stable, etc.)?

Also, does the DVD drive type matter anymore?

If anyone has any other advice as to what I should look for (manufacture date with known problems, etc.) I would appreciate that input as well. Thanks in advance for any responses; this is a fantastic resource for 360 info.
