Best way to backup DV tapes

Hello there,

I was wondering what would be the best way to create backup copies of my DV tapes (Sony PC120T) in a computer file. In short 60 minutes of DV on a 700mb CD with best possible quality.
Basically, I'm copying my DV tapes onto regular VHS tapes using the VCR like everybody does. But in 15 years from now, god nows what will have happened to the VHS tapes of my newborn baby. So I'd like to be able to turn on my computer, stick in the CD and use the file on it to re-create a VHS tape. What format should I use?

If im not mistaken the maximum number of MiniDV minutes that can be put on one CD is 28 mintues at full quality. This is because the rate of transfer is around 25MBps. I recommend backing up you Mini DV's onto the HDD and then burning a few of them to DVD.

Thank you for your reply Oriphus.

BTW, I love your animation (my dad always says: If you cannot make fun of sad things in life, you'll never laugh about anything).

Anyhow, what format and settings should I use to first backup my DV tape on the HDD ? I'm using Power Director Pro which has both a pretty good wizard and manual settings (So far, though, I just did a couple of experiments with 20 sec files).

What are the results of your 20 second files? Are thy any good. Follow the recommendation of the user manual to start off with and become more adventuress as you learn more.

They are ok, but i mostly played with Mpeg. I guess what I'm trying to find out is how to select the best possible output one step down from the AVI / DV which uses 200mb/minute.
I tried Mpeg 2 video High Quality - constant Low bitrate which takes about 30mb/min (and is probably the one you refered to as it would take about 700 mb to put 25 min). Is there anything in between ?
Should I choose High bitrate or the DVD choice under the same Mpeg2 category ?
