I recently tripped on my headphone cable, and the plug partially came out of the socket, but I wasn't aware of it at first. After that, whenever I played any audio (like an MP3 file, or a video with an audio stream), I could hear only the background music. In most cases, I couldn't hear the voices at all, only a few selected beats of the music (eg. only drums and the piano...) In some of my audio files, I heard some music that I never had noticed before (probably because it was recorded in the background). I've now plugged-in the cable firmly and everything is back to normal.

My question here is that, is there any way to split these audio streams (whatever they are called), and play them one at a time, but on the software level?

I don't think what you want is possible unless you had the original DAT tapes from where the recording took place. There isn't the technology at the moment that can remove lets say the drums or the guitar from the recording. It's kinda like if you were mixing paint to make a special colour and you put in too much red how would you get the excess red out. Sorry Vince.
