I've backed up dozens of movies with my Dell computer, Phillips 8631 DVD drive, DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. No problems. Good clean burns. I picked up some Memorex DVD + R DL discs on sale to try out. The burn went fine, but when playing, they hang at the layer break. Otherwise ok.
After reading a bunch of threads, I figured the problem was the discs. So I bought a pack of Verbatim + R DL discs. I now have 3 coasters, no good copies. The process of ripping, shrinking, burning with Decrypter all goes smoothly, including the final message that it completed correctly. But when I re-insert the disc it won't boot and the computer says it is a blank disc. Even though I can see it is burned. I need some help. This is way too expensive to keep trashing discs!

Thanks for the suggestions. I tired imageburn on the second try, same effect. I have the latest firmware listed GD30. I burn at 2X. And I did choose to let image burn select optimum layer break. Any other ideas?

emerger,
Since it is failing using the newer blank media the only suggestion left is for you to buy another DVD Burner or find older blank media that the burner's firmware recog properly. In the US you can get a burner for $40.00 and up. Look for the NEC,Lite-on or Benq's brands.

Thanks for the help. Dell is sending me a new NEC drive. Hope it does the trick. Just for my understanding, how does new media differ from old? Specifically, why would a drive not recognize the new media correctly?

emerger,
Each Blank DVD has a code on the inner ring that tells the burner what type of disk it is and the best way to burn the disk. The DVD burner manuf can then write firmware( MID Code) so the burner can recog that blank DVD and know how to burn the DVD properly. If the new Blank media is not recog. by the Burner when inserted into the drive then the burning process will have problems as the burner does not know how to properly burn the blank DVD.
I know that the above explanation if really simple but if you want more info on it do a Google search for " Mid Codes" and the info is there but in greater detail
