ad-hoc wireless - only works after logging on main PC

2 PCs

1 laptop (with a wireless card in it)
1 main PC with a USB modem (used to connect to the ISP)

both Win XP SP 2.

laptop connects fine to main PC over wireless BUT only after I have logged in on the main PC (as any user).

A few weeks ago the ad hoc wirless connection started the modem dialling out even during the welcome screen but not now

why is that?

Any help appreciated
