DVDSHRINK Subtitles question.................

Why do some DVDs have two ENGLISH subtitles? For example, one is 5mb and the other is 3mb... Which one do I keep if I only want one?

Good question. These movies are all assembled with the same parts and pieces, mainly Video Title Sets....kinda like, but not exactly like the chapters.
The thing is that each studio has a particular way of assembling these parts and it really depends on the movie and all the associated clever tricks that may be added. For example if there is an "Angle" option that lets you select a different ending for the movie, then they may put in a different subtitle stream for that alternate angle.
Now in this case, having both will only be 8 MB compared to 3 or 5 MB. That is not enough to make any perceivable difference in the quality. Keep both.
When I have a question about DVD structure, streams and the like, I'll spend some time and open each VTS in Shrink and see what is present on it. That is about as simple as you can get. You could open the .ifos,etc in IFOEdit and take a closer look but that's overkill.
If you let us know what movie(s), we could take a look and figure it out for you.

Thanks FasFrank, the movie is called BON COP, BAD COP. It is a bilingual movie that just came out. Another quick question, if there are two english subs, one a couple of KBs and the other one 3-5 MBs... Is the one that's only a couple of KBs usually for the EXTRAS? I also just tried my recently bought CloneDVD yesterday and I didn't see an option to select "Hide subpicture" like in SHRINK... Did I just miss it?

When you get to the third screen, look for this:
I'm looking at a movie with Clone and it is listing two same language (Spanish) subtitles for main movie. Lets investigate!!
The same movie opened in Shrink shows only one 6MB Spanish subtitle stream.
The same movie opened in Nero Recode shows only one 7MB Spanish subtitle stream.
Playing the movie in Windows Media Player shows two available Spanish subtitles with the media players Play > Captions and Subtitles Menu. I tried watching the movie and then toggling back and forth between the two. Only one of them results in Spanish subtitles being displayed.
I opened the movie inIfoEdit and got pretty much the same results. I could see the second subtitle stream listed in the VTS Attribute table. It had the same attributes as the first stream but with a different address.
OK, So I have not got to the bottom of this with this movie. Like I metioned before though, keeping both subtitle streams shouldn't be a problem size-wise. It does look like I could, in this case, eliminate the second subtitle stream.
This did not help you much with the "Why" part of your question but I hope it showed you how you can investigate specific aspects of a movie with some of the programs we use.

Look for those checkboxes I show in the picture in my previous post. This is located on the "Audio and Subtitle Settings" screen.
Unchecking those will remove the corresponding subtitle streams for the individual titles listed above.
In other words, by highlighting a title listed at the top, you can then configure it's audio and subtitle streams without changing the stream settings in other (unselected) titles.
To the right of that are the "Stream Preferences" checkboxes.
By checking/unchecking these you can set the stream selections for all the titles at once.(The entire movie) This is what I normally do.

i guess i posted this question in the wrong place it wasn't answered and closed so i found this thread and hope this is the correct place to post this question my problem is with the movie a bridge too far it has foreign speaking persons in and engish persons in it and when the foreign people talk theres no subtitles for them which yes i could just turn on the subtitle feature on my t.v but then theres subtitles for everyone i just want the subtitle for the none english speaking people .this is how i backed this movie up first read and backup to hard disc folder with Vob Blanker then read and compress with shrink and burn. just a thought but could i have taken out something i needed with Vob Blanker because once i read it through shrink all subs are there and cheaked but i still get no subtitles for the none engish speaking persons. I hope i explaned this well enough.looking foward to here from someone and thanks for your time and help. this site has always been loaded with valueable info and usally i find what i'm looking for but this time i guess is a little different

if i wanted the english subtitles id make sure all the boxes for subtitles are checked. sometimes there are subtitles within a subtitle, what i mean is say for example the movie 'kill bill vol 2' pai mae speaks cantonese and so does beatrix, so if you removed the english subtitles on the movie you wouldnt know what pai mae was sayin , unless you spoke fluent cantonese. my best advice is if you want the subtitles , make sure they are ALL checked. also sometimes the special features have subtitles. its better to have them than not have them ;)

First go into Shrink > Edit > Preferences and uncheck the "Hide audio and subpicture streams of insignificant size."
Also take a look at the Stream Selections Tab and make sure the "Disable all subpicture except menus and forced streams." box is unchecked.
OK... there are two types of Subtitles, Subpictures or whatever you want to call them.
The first are the regular ones that are for the hearing impaired. These display all the dialog of the movie and may include things like music playing", "woman screaming" etc....Help for the hearing impaired.
The second type, and the one you seem to be looking for, are the "Forced Subtitles" You see these in movies like The Lord of the Rings when the elves are speaking Elvish. The English translation is displayed. Or in Tora Tora Tora when Japanese is spoken. The DaVinci Code when French is being spoken.
Now if your movie was not provided with a Forced Subtitles stream then you are not going to be able to do what you want to do. If it was not provided with one then you are stuck with that. You can only make sure you are not removing it if it is there. I couldn't tell if you had. It didn't seem like you had done anything to remove it, if it was there in the first place.

yes both boxes from what you told are uncheaked and yes it does have a forced subtitle in shrink and even though these subtitles are all cheaked i still have no luck with having the forced subtitles play. do you have any more ideas ? if not i'll keep trying things to see if i can get it to work and let you know if i have any luck thank you for your promt reply it was helpfull thumbs up to afterdawn cheers.
