Can I use my external hard drive to update my PS3?

Hi,
As the title states, I am wanting to update my PS3 system firmware via the update download stored on my external hard drive, and just wanted to know if that was possible. I cant open my PS3 till Christmas, and will not have acess to the internet that day so I need to know if I can just put the update from the playstation website onto my External Hard Drive (Maxtor, 80GB) and if the system would recognize the drive. I also have a 60gb 5th gen iPod, but I dont think I can make the appropriate folders on that.

yes you can just follow the instuctions at Sony's website!
I am in the same boat as you need to waghit 1 more day till I can open it!

Yeah I thought I could but I wasn't sure the Hard Drive was an acceptable usb device.
