I have episodes of Charmed on my hard drive that are in "avi" and mpg" format, do I need to convert them to burn them onto a DVD or can I just burn them the way they are? And if so, how do I do that?

You do need to convert them to DVD-Video compliant files before burning to a DVD. Otherwise they will only play on your computer.
My favorite method is to use VSO ConvertX toDVD. This program has a free trial but leaves a watermark.
