Hi there. I'm certainly no expert w/ DVD burning, so hopefully some kind soul out there will help. I've been having some really strange problems w/ my DVD.

(1) It will only burn about 3.5 gigs accurately. (Or about 85% of what it should).
(2) I called Gateway and they sent me a new burner and still no luck, so it's not the burner.
(3) It doesn't matter what media (cheap CompUSA DVD's or Memorex DVD's).
(4) It doesn't matter if I'm burning movies to play on a DVD player or data DVD's.
(5) I've tried using "Copy To DVD" and "Nero" and they both give the same problem, so it's not the software.

If I try to burn movies at full capacity, the movies skip or freeze up about 2/3 the way into the movie. If I try to burn data DVD's, the "verification" process at the end tells me that it can't read several sectors at the end (outer) portion of the DVD.

This has been frustrating and expensive and I'm going to reformat the computer to see if that has any effect.

It's a Gateway GT5014 w/ a dual layer DVD burner.

Any suggestions or ideas???

Thanks,
David

may well be able to help if you give us a Nero logfile entry...

if it's Nero 6, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

if it's Nero 7, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '5C80' or similar.

Either way uou can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

However that link has to come out of the sig

Thanks for the fast response.

The history file is kinda big, but it's below. I took out the serial number.

Also that link I had in the signature is my homepage, I'm a private tutor. Not looking for business or spamming, but it's also a personal homepage so I often include it. But I took it out... I have so many customers now, I'm not sure I can handle any more!... So I'm NOT spamming. I hate spam!

I'm actually going to reformat my computer and set everything back to factory settings, but I'm going to save the Nero log file, it might help in the future if this problem persists.

Funny thing, the people here seem more helpful than the Gateway customer service!

Thanks again for you help,
David

- erm, right then..

(1) It will only burn about 3.5 gigs accurately. (Or about 85% of what it should).
- this could well be indicative of inferior media

(2) I called Gateway and they sent me a new burner and still no luck, so it's not the burner.
- burner should be ok

(3) It doesn't matter what media (cheap CompUSA DVD's or Memorex DVD's).
- Memorex are NOT decent, not sure about CompUSA, will have to search the forums on those. Memorex use various companies' discs so it's a lottery as to what you get with them.

- we need to do a CRC scan on one or more of the discs.

(5) I've tried using "Copy To DVD" and "Nero" and they both give the same problem, so it's not the software.
- at least with Nero we can root out the problem(s)

If I try to burn movies at full capacity, the movies skip or freeze up about 2/3 the way into the movie. If I try to burn data DVD's, the "verification" process at the end tells me that it can't read several sectors at the end (outer) portion of the DVD.
- the skips/freezes could be the dvd player being picky, however it can also be indicative of inferior media, as the dye isn't always as even nearer the end of inferior discs. Also see my comment further down about Nero's hit-and-miss verification feature.

Onto the logfile...

Quote:
Nero Version: 6.6.0.15
- latest & greatest 6.x version is 6.6.0.18 however this version's fine & not part of your problem.

Recorder: <TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552D>Version: GA01
- according to this - http://www.toshibaer.com/firmware/index.php?path=TS-H552D - GA01 (Gateway OEM) for the TSSTCorp TS-H552D seems to be up to date as of Oct '06

Quote:
Recorder: TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552D, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: PRINCO -
Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193
- those are obviously some of the cheap & nasty discs :P

Quote:
Burn process completed successfully at 4x (5,540 KB/s)
- seems ok here

Data verification started

Read errors from sector 1796592 to 1796607
- forgetting the fact you have actually experienced problems with the discs, Nero's verification feature is next to worthless, we'll do stuff like CRC scan the discs instead ie we'll look for corruption manually.

edit- like this - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/439636/2659611 - read down a few posts and you'll see it

Well, I reformatted the computer and everything is working fine now, even with the cheap CompUSA disks. I think maybe I was trying to use an older version of "Copy to DVD" and when I tried to install it, the password may have been wrong. I bought the software back in I think 03, but I didn't write down the set-up code, so when I installed it, I think it may have messed up the DVD writing drivers.

It all works okay now, since I reinstalled everything, talk about time consuming!

Funny thing is that I can play the bad DVD's that I burned in the burner, but other DVD drives won't read the disks.

Oh well, enough.

Thank you for your help,
David
