Hi, i needed to ask a question. im installing a matrix infinity in my v12 ps2 slim, and it says in the installation guide to tin all the soldering points. is this nesscesary? if so, what does it do? i think it helps electricity conductivity, but im not entirely sure.

PS. You also have to heat up the copper pads on the motherboard of the ps2 in order to remove the protective coating. i read on an article that that is not neccesary if you use a small screwdriver to scrape the via copper pads until they become slightly shiny. is this true? and i have purchased some single core kynar wire for all the points except the ground and 3.3v connections, but it says in the installation manual to tin all the wire before soldering, but it is single copper core, and has allready been tinned under the installation. do i still need to tin it? and the wire for the ground and 3.3v connections do i need to tin that at all?

sorry about all the questions, but im a beginner.

Thanks,

Aszbaz

wow. You should seriously practice modding a PSX first. Most likely youll mess up your first PS2 installation.

pre-tinning assures you that the contact points are clean. it also makes bonding of two components (the pads and the wire) faster and with less heat and less time that the heat has to be applied. you should tin all the pads and all your wires after you cut them to length and strip the ends.

to remove the film over the MOBO pads use a #11 Xacto blade to scrape them carefully to remove JUST the coating, then use flux to clean them and tin them as well.

while practicing on other electronic components (such as the PSX/PS1) might improve your soldering skills it doesn't prepare you to mod a PS2. i know folks who have modded a few hundred XBOXs and couldn't mod a PS2 if their life depended on it. i didn't agree with the previous statement made but choose to disregarded it for what it was (or wasnt) worth........

also an 'expert' solderer is very vague, the guy at the local radiator repair shop is an expert solderer. when it comes to coring a radiator, putting a new tank on or fixing a leak, he's the best but wouldn't even know where to start with an electronic circuit.

I've been soldering for 17+ yrs in the aircraft avionics and electronics repair field and hold certification in satellite repair, unfortunately i don't rank expert in satellites repair where you're rated on it by the thousandths of a gram weight on your repair, but to me a PS2 is a walk in the park......my point being, be careful who you call an expert. I've repaired consoles that were f'd up by self proclaimed experts and their soldering looked like globs of BBs all over the board.

Broken PC parts are good for practice. Just last night I practiced on an old PCI modem. But, knowing what good soldering looks like would be a lot more helpful to you.

Thanks KC, but this guy i know, he is pretty good. hes a teacher a a secondary school, and he teaches technology and soldering.he said it would be a hard job, but he would be able to do it if i got the right tools. what i needed was the two types af kynar wire, and the soldering tip. btw, would i need to tin the thinner kynar wire if it has allready been tinned i asked the guy at the shop why it was called copper wire when its silver underneath the insulation, an he said its tinned and the inner core is copper.

an instructor should have access to a soldering station with the right tip and HE should know the answers to all the questions you're asking, seams a bit odd that you're asking if that be the case.........

the tinning of the wire as is off the spool isn't in a quantity to reheat and bond to the contacts that is why you need to tin them after you strip the insulation. also the power/gnd wire are stranded wire.

Can't help ya there, I'm in the US and there are legalities about shipping modded consoles to the UK from here so I've never had dealings with any UK based person/s.

Damn.... well the guy who is doing it has some kind of degree in soldering and technology, but he hasnt done anything that hard in a while... well, i suppose all i can do is give him some tools, cross my fingers and hope for the best.... Or cry..... I used to have some good skills in soldering, probably not enough to mod a ps2, maybe solder a circuit board, but that was two years ago..... but im getting back into very basic soldering some time this year.... anyway, if you can find me a place that does good modding in the uk, thanks, if not, thanks anyway....

You might look into http://www.gamestore24.de they are in Europe, I think Germany.
