Alright, before i go out and go on a rampage i will try to make this as pleasant as possible. I just got my new pc and cannot set up file sharing on it. Nor can the two desktops ping each other which are hooked up like modem>router>pc's. I have all my games, music etc. on the other pc and can't afford to rebuy all my music which was purchased online. The router is a belkin f5d7230-4 and I have roadrunner cable internet. They are both running windows XP sp2 and both are able to connect to the net. I also have a laptop but it can connect to the net fine also although I have never tried setting it up on the network. I have run the network wizard on both desktops and they have the same workgroups and the names are 6 characters each and have simple charing enabled and i am still unable ping them. When I go into the shared folders I only see the folders of each respectable pc. I have disabled the firewalls on each and have turned off all the virus blockers and spyware blockers and still nothing. Becase this pc came with norton already on the windows startup I wonder if I have not fully disabled it or something. They both can ping themselves and the router but I don't know why they can't ping each other. If anybody can explain it in regular words and not point me into another PoS useless thread on some other site that talks in circles, that would be great. Thanks to everyone in advance =)

It should be there in the settings somewhere, I dont know about the belkin routers. Netbios is UDP port 137 you can always forward that port. And just to make sure, you have gone to "network connections" and have chosen "view workgroup computers" and it doesnt show the other pcs?
Or it does and just no folders in them? You do know have to r/c the folder the files you want to share are in and choose properties then sharing tab then share. Also why dont you try and see if the laptop can connect to the workgroup if it can and at least share with one of the computers you'll know the other pc is the problem maybe because of a a firewall of some sort.

Quick network check...

1) in a command prompt, type IPCONFIG /ALL | MORE on both machines (note vertical bar before MORE)
2) check HOST NAME (machine name) is different on both, and no spaces, punctuation, etc.
3) check IP ADDRESS is similar on both (usually last digit only changes)
4) check SUBNET MASK the same on both
5) check DEFAULT GATEWAY same on both
6) check DNS SERVER same on both
7) type IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS to clear out old name cache

NOTE: there may be multiple network "cards" displayed (dialup PPP, FireWire, etc) so make sure you're looking at the right one!

Try NSLOOKUP yahoo.com to check external name translation first
Try PING yahoo.com for external connectivity check
Turn OFF firewalls on both machines, and try PING between them by IP address first, then by name

@Dfram In workgroups its just each pc on each workgroup by themselves and it will not show the folders either. it still does not explain why they will not ping which I am still baffeled by and they laptop (win98) Didn't even get it's own network thats why I didn't mention that. I guess I'll never play wow on private servers again lol because I can't transfer my old v1.12.1 files to my new pc and when i download from the official wow trial it gives me v2.0 and it's kinda depressing. Oh well I have posted the same problem on a few other forums so hopefully I should get somebody to at least get me a free file transfer program b/c i cant file share. Well thanks anyway because this is totally stupmed me.

@tjohns diff last #'s on the ips and same rest, all firewalls disabled or it would give a PING: Transmit failed, error code 65. (happened a min ago when i restarted) What is strange when i do the nslookup yahoo.com i get a ***Can't find server name for adress 192.168.2.1:Non-exixtant domain***Default servers not available but it still gives me the info for yahoo like the ips and both pcs ping yahoo.com fine... thanks for the help though
