PSX games on PS2 problems!!! HELP NEEDED PLEASE!

okay so i have about 4 final fantasy 9 save files on my psone memory card from 5 years ago. I never got to finish it because it was badly copied and screwed up on one of the final bosses. Five years later my bro buys me the real copy for xmas!! I boot the game up on my ps2 (modded) slimline and for some reason the saved files are not recognised. Im not sure if the copied version i had 5 years ago was NTSC rather then the PAL version i currently have at the moment so maybe that could have caused the problem? I doubt it though =| I have browsed the psone memory card to make sure i had not deleted the files but they are still there...any help would be greatly appreaciated!

make a copy of your save files on a different memory card (for psone of course)

Or as I said before play on a psone.
