Hi

Sorry if this is a newbie question, but I am a newbie!

Trying to make a backup of my scratched up Castle In the Sky. Keep getting errors (at 98%!). So decided to try to re-author. Notice that under Main Movie, there is

Title 2
Title 2 (Angle 2)

The are both the same length and the same size! Do I need both? What is this?

Thanks

Multiple angle movies have 2 versions of the same movie that are the same length. Sometimes DVDs have identical versions of the same movie marked as different angles to confuse people who are trying to back them up. Generally there's no difference between them and you can use either one. Usually you're safe just backing up angle 1.

Sadly, both angles result in error. Disc is too damaged, I guess. Arrgh. Will have to get a new one instead. Wish I had installed the burner BEFORE the kids got a hold of the disc!

Still plays, though some parts get stuck and you have to fast forward through them. I guess there's no way to "ff" in a similar fashion when making a backup?

I am getting:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue

Failed to read drive E:\

Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

I've tried Img burn, and DVD decryptor, same issues. I have it down to one file thats causing the problem, but even though I tried using decryptor to copy only that file into the directory, it could not do it. Its 550k or so, and after like an hour, it only copied over 10k. It would retry like 29 times before moving on to the next sector.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I hate buying the same disk twice.

Crc error?

In your case,it means your disc is damaged. I've backed up some pretty nasty scratched dvds, while other with a few scratches wouldn't.

Try cleaning the disc up. I use eyeglass cleaner and silk rags.Wipe from inner hub to outer edge-in a straight line, not in a circular motion.

Then open up DVD Decrypter,Tools/Settings:
Click the css tab and tick Rip with brute force.
Click the I/O box and tick the box that says Ignore Read errors
OK.

Then try ripping with DVD Decrypter. I sometimes get lucky with those crc errors. If it's a DVD-9,use file mode. If it's a DVD-5-use ISO mode.

If you have quite a few damaged discs, you can get the SkipDr disc cleaner. Walmart has these. They have the motorized and the hand crank. I got the hand crank cleaner and it sucks.

If no luck, take it to a dvd rental store. The larger rental stores will have some very good disc polishing machines and usually don't even charge you.

I agree with the above. Try DVD FAb before giving up hope. That program seems to be really good and backing up scratched discs that others won't even look at.

Hi

Sorry, DVD FAb? What is that?

Do I have too many DVD apps on my PC? I downloaded a trial version of Nero and installed it (it uninstalled my Nero express which came with the burner). Then I added DVD Shrink. Then Img Burn. Then I found a link to DVD Decryptor (thought it was all gone!). Then I got something called BlindDVD as a freebie. Lol. DVD overload.

I'm actually watching the DVD now. About 10 minutes in, it just stopped. FF, Rew, Slow, nothing worked. Except Next Chapter. Then it skipped like 2 or 3 chapters. I used Rew to go back, but all the scenes about 2 minutes from the first stop point also get stuck. Baaad sectors, I guess.

I remember seeing a product that supposedly filled in the gaps on scratches a long time ago. Anyone know if that stuff works? And if so, where I can get it? Might be cheaper than buying new DVDs.

Thanks

Nevermind. Looked up DVDfab. Another decryptor. lol. I downloaded it and will give it a try when I get a chance. Maybe it has better correction logic? And more up to date decryption? Tried to backup a different disk before, and got an "unable to decrypt" message!

Hehe. Yes, DVDs get abused around here too. Amazing, when I was a kid, we didnt even have a VCR. Now 2 year olds know how to play DVDs.

Anyway... I was able to rip it to my c: using DVDfab. But it took a looong time, even with ignore all errors. In the end, it said that 7,127 unreadable sectors were skipped.

Is that a lot? 8-)

Disc resurfacing tools are available at stores. I bought a Disc DR for those bad scratched discs I pick up at sales. I also use a disc rescue software, DVDXRescue (no longer available that I'm aware of). The cyclic redundancy is just a timeout because the read speed has gotten so slow. Most apps will stop and try to read the info at the bad spot instead of going on (cyclic redundancy). With the DVD Decrypter you can set it to ignore errors and set the retries to a lower number or 0. That might help, depending on the extent of the damage. Decrypter is one of the better programs for slowing down and getting files copied.
