i know that this has been answered before but it was never with a straight answer

do i need the xbox wireless adaptor to use xbox live on the 360 or can i use a netgear or d-link adaptor

yuo sure cause i want live but i dont have $100. The people from xbox hotline said something about an alternative 80211g adaptor but i dont want to buy that either without knowing if it will work

Yeah for the original Xbox. But for the 360 you need that one I linked above.
Edit - you can always go ethernet until you get the wireless adapter.

how much is a 20 meter ethernet cable and does one that long lag your live

I don't get any lag but I have 8Meg Cable here. I think every game is Live aware in some sorts, except Cars.. I haven't found that option to play online, but hell... my 3 year old got those 1000 achievement points for me :)

BTW, I have every game released in the USA for the 360.

The Xbox 360 has an ethernet port around the back so wouldnt another (cheaper) solution be using a Wireless Ethernet Bridge? Not sure in the US but a bridge is cheaper than the xbox 360 adaptors in the UK.
