I have been looking to backup my dvd collection and I'm not sure what the best software for this task would be. I've noticed that there are a lot of programs out there, some free downloads and some you have to purchase. I would like to know which one does the best job with the current dvds that are being released. I don't mind paying for the software if it will work on all newly released dvds.

i find DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink work well, decrypter reads the dvd and create's an .iso (Decrypter also can burn iso files). And shrink allows one to reauthor and shrink a movie to fit on a DVD5 disc. Both programs are free, and I find them the best IMO.
If you choose to go this route, there are numerous tutorials on how to use these programs in conjunction.

Hope this helps!
Alex

Most of my backups:

Single layer backups: Rip using DVD Shrink and autoburning with nero6. I use those nero6 oem discs.

newer encryptions, I enable AnyDVD in the background. No extra step is involved. Decrypter and shrink aren't updated any more to handle the newer encryptions: Columbia,Sony,Disney. AnyDVD will pull off those newer encryptions and with no extra step involved.

Open up DVD Shrink, enabling AnyDVD,re-author or entire disc, set all targets + settings,ok and away she goes. Dual drives, even sweeter. It's like a 1 program process.

Dual layer backups:

Rip using DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO read. Open up ImgBurn, locate the mds files, open,ok,set burn speed and burn away. Both are free, but no longer updated. AnyDVD will have to be activated with some of the newer releases. A very fast and effective way to backup when no compression is involved.

Dvd shrink/Dvd decrypter/ImgBurn= Free
Anydvd = Free 21 day trial and $40 after that, but well worth the money. They sometimes run a discount, which 1 is going on right now so you can get it for $35

I have not met a new release that DVD Shrink and AnyDVD couldn't handle!!!!!!!!!!!
