Just looking for some answers if my dvd burner which has been hard at work for about a year now loses some of its burning "power" so to speak. My burned dvds work fine on my player but some of the movies occaisionally freeze up on some of the other players...Some background...I have the latest slysoft and burn at 4x.
I have had this unit NEC 3530A for about 2 years when I bought this dell..They replace the Phillips which was nothing but problems.
Thanks..Mike

Hi mgaudet
Yes like most things they only last so long. The laser can become weaker for one thing.

But let's check a few things. The players may be at fault too - they only last so long also. Try running a lens cleaner on them - dusty lens can cause problems.
How do the discs playback on the burner?

Using good media like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, made in japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell?
Firmware up to date on the burner? The latest is 104C

I go along with binkie. If the DVDs play on your player, that shows the burner did its job and your player is doing its job. Then you get into situations like dirty optical heads, dust and smoke are the usual problem. There's also firmware problems with some standalone players using different media. So you get into player compatibility issues. For better overall compatibility use media manufactured by the better manufacturers. MCC, TY, and Ricohjpn are 3 of the tops that manufacture for top brands, including Verbatim. Taiyo Yuden (TY) makes the Japanese Sony +R. I've had good results with the Taiwanese +R Sony as well (Sony is the manufacturer, or at least that's the code). Use DVD Identifier to see what is being used.

Be sure to follow Binkie's advice and make sure the firmware for the burner is up to date and set the booktype to DVD ROM if your burner has the capability.
