I have been happily burning for quite a while now and have never had a problem with my Plextor 708A slipping into PIO mode. I have seen on this forum that many others have experienced this problem. In the last month for some reason, I have had this happen two times. I know how to fix it thanks to all the helpful information on this forum but does anyone know what causes that to happen so that I can try to prevent it from happening in the future?

Hello.

It's caused by communication problems on the bus. It could be the drive, the comm chip on the board, the cable, or even a hard to read disk that triggers the switch in mode.

I usually start with the cable first as the likely culprit. Make sure the connectors to the motherboard and burner are firmly seated and that there are no crimps in the ribbon cable. Round IDE cables are obviously better in many respects. If you have a spare IDE cable lying about, replace the cable to the burner and see if that solves the problem for you.

it could also be your getting read errors, after a certain amount of them, it will change to pio mode.
