How do i copy a dvd such as '24' without using the menus? Will i need to just compress it using dvd shrink to a silly compression rate or can i re-authur it?

You can re-author it to two episodes on each disc with no compression, using DVD Shrink and TMPGEnc DVD Author. Check the user guide website in my signature below:
