I?m hooking up my new Home Theatre that consists of:

Samsung HL-S6187W HDTV
Dishnetwork ViP622 HD DVR
Sony PlayStation3
Onkyo TX-SR304 AV Receiver
Bose ACOUSTIMASS 6 Speakers
HDMI Cables - Optical Cables - Component Video Cables

If I :
Connect the DVR to the Onkyo using an Optical cable, I get Dolby 5.1
Connect the PS3 to the Onkyo using an Optical cable, I get Dolby 5.1

But when I..

Connect the DVR to the Samsung using HDMI(#1), Connect the PS3 to the Samsung using HDMI(#2), then use the Samsung?s Optical Out to the Onkyo, I only get ProLogic II to the Onkyo.

What I?m trying to do is use the Samsung?s Optical out so my wife and kids only have to press one button on one remote (source) to switch from Dishnetwork to the PS3, but not lose the Dolby 5.1.

Any ideas as to what I?m doing wrong?

your problem seems to be caused by your tv hookup you should use a optical switcher which will allow you to feed three optical inputs into your receiver all you need to do is move the switch to feed what ever component you want to use i have been using one for many years you can get a switch from www.partsexpress.com the cost is either 17.95 or 19.95 by the way do not use the opitical out from your tv

The logic behind your configuration is quite sound. I don't think David understood the configuration with his answer. In THEORY the configuration is fine, however it seems that the Samsung puts out a stereo signal on the optical out, regardless of the inout signal. I am trying to get a definitive answer from Samsung, as I have found printed information to the contrary, but alas, there is no 5.1 signal at the output. I have actually put an optical signal anaylzer on the unit, and it is a pure 2 channel digital signal. I'm personally looking into an HDMI switch with a separate audio out, but they're not cheap. Secondarily there are a FEW reveivers that have HDMI switching capabilities. Neither of these is what I had in mind when I purchased the unit.
