I'm copying and pasting this over from the CD Freaks forum, however, they're not as active over there, so I'm getting no responses:
Quote: First off, I'm not sure what version my PS2 is, I think it's a version 6, or 7, it's a 39010/N.
My First Problem:
On purchase, I ordered a Magic V modchip, installed it, now it didn't work as I had expected, yes, it did boot backups, but it took several tries, also, the PLAYSTATION logo was all blurry and what not. If I get a chance I might take a pic, it looks like static when your TV is on a channel you don't have, but just in the logo square.
Second:
This modchip worked, to a certain extent, as I said, it took several tries to boot, eventually it got better, and booted properly, then, it gradually got worse. Its 5 years old now, the console still reads Audio CDs (after my pulling it apart to see what was wrong, I managed to somehow fix my DVD rom?) which, now plays audio CDs with NO SKIPPING WHAT SO EVER! (It used to skip like hell), it reads PS1 DVDs fine, and, I only tried Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (original) on it, which, runs fine (oddly enough?).
Now, I was running Hitman: Blood Money (backup) after my pulling it apart and putting it back together, the game would randomly stop reading the DVD, etc, then retry, then load the level. Now, eventually, loading one map, it stopped, the DVD rom just kept spinning, and couldn't read the DVD. What else could I do? I reset it. Now, when I turn the Magic V off (set to stand-by, turn PS2 on holding the reset button), I can boot PS1(orig and backup <- wtf?) games, fine. I can also boot MGS2: Substance (orig) fine. But as soon as I turn the chip on (standby, press ps2 reset button once) it won't read MGS2, nor any backups for the matter. Anyone have ANY idea what the hell is wrong with my chip?
Thanks.
[edit]
I just tried booting a PS2 CD-R backup, it won't give me the "Please Insert Playstation 1 or 2 Content" or whatever screen, instead, it just gives me a black screen, like the PS2 is crashing, or the mod chip isn't kicking in properly, but I would think DVDs would do the same.
[edit2]
Okay, trying it over and over, I got it to boot my SNES Station CD-R. Just ran Earthbound on it, which, started up and is working fine. I'm gonna try booting a backup from my AR-Max. Also got it to boot Marvel vs Capcom 2 REMIX (PS2 CD-R backup)
[edit3]
Nope, tried to boot from the AR-MAX, saves settings, screen fades black, and it takes me back to the "Please insert a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format disc." screen.
Now, since that post, I had seen many posts about a similar issue, about how the 'DVD part' of the lens could have gone. So I decided to do a test with GTA: Vice City (which constantly reads data from the game) (also, orig, not backup), now, I can't boot the game with the modchip on (I used to be able to), just tells me to insert a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format disc, but if I turn the modchip off, I can boot it no problem. Also running the game, it runs fine, no problems what so ever. If the lens was gone, I would've expected a "Please insert Grand Thef Auto: Vice City DVD" to show up or whatever GTA says if you open the tray. So, I don't think its my lens, like I said MGS2 works fine aswell. But I'm still at the point I can only boot PS1 orig/backups, PS2 origs, DVDs and audio (with the chip off), I can only boot PS2 CD-Rs with the chip on, if the modchip is off, CD-R backups will give me the standard "Please insert PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format disc." screen, as I would expect. So, any idea why, when my modchip is on, it can't read DVD backups?
