Slow Transfers with Windows File Sharing

Hello all. I frequently download movies using my desktop computer, then copy the .AVI files to my media center over the network for later enjoyment. Lately, however, I've come across excruciatingly long transfer times (700MB file estimated at 50 minutes).

I've been toiling all weekend to figure out what the problem is. I tried installing an FTP server on my media center to see if the file would transfer any faster that way. Viola! 700MB in about 2 minutes! For some reason, dragging and dropping files across shared drives in windows is not working properly but FTP transfers work fine, so this rules out any hardware issues. Any ideas? Please, I'm desperate not to have to reinstall the OS on both PCs. Thanks.
