DVD playback on secondary monitor in WMP

I recently purchased a secondary monitor for my laptop. It's connected via VGA. When I tried to play a DVD on the secondary monitor, a message came up saying DVD playback wasn't possible through the VGA cable on a secondary monitor. Any idea why this is? Is there a workaround?
