Memory cards won't work with Swap Magic 3.8 with Coder.

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I have the fat PS2, the slide card tool and Swap Magic 3.8 with coder. I have no problem running my burnt DVD games, however my memory cards are not Sony PS2 Brand so they normally have to load through Action Replay Max. I run AR Max, hit "start game without codes", put in Swap Magic, swap to my burnt game and then I get a black screen. Is AR Max conflicting with Coder? If I use the same procedure, but without running AR Max first, my games work fine but I can't save my progress to the memory cards. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks for your time.
