Hola all, not a newbie. I have spent much time on this so will try to make it short.
Dell Inspiron 9500 60GB HD 1/2GB memory P4M 2.2GHZ NEC DVD+-RW ND-6650A (currently) DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15, DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 and Nero 6.6.0.18
I would use DVD Decrypter-->DVDShrink w/Nero to burn and DVDFab if problems with DVD Decrypter. No problems for 1 and a half years. however, It has always taken me 2+ hours to burn a movie. My laptop became corrupted so I reinstalled XP Pro - nothing but problems since.
My DVD Burner was a Sony D56A with latest firmware. Once I reinstalled it would take 5 hours to burn a DVD. I disabled my antivirus and firewall (not SP2) and then could burn at the 2 hours I was used to. For some reason (I forget) I reinstalled and then my
Sony DVD burner would not recognize media - tried everything did not work and now I am using an NEC DVD+-RW ND-6650A. It recognized media but of course would take 5+ hours to burn. This is a barebones system, no patches or hot fixes, no SP2, not antivirus or firewall to slow anything down. The encoding would run at 700KB! Multiple times of doing the following has now got me back to the 2 hour mark.
uninstalled Nero, decrypter and shrink. Ran CCleaner - uninstalled the Primary IDE channel. Installed Nero - ran CCleaner - uninstalled the primary IDE channel. Installed shrink, then decrypter - ran Ccleaner - still encoding at 700Kb - would start at 1800KB then cycle down - uninstalled secondary channel, rebooted, then primary, then rebooted and it now encodes at 1200kb (takes about 1 hr 50 min) and burns the DVD at 8x. Man!!!
Now...what can I do to get DVDs burnt in 45 minutes like everyone else? Have I stumped you all? : )
Regards,

Not a DMA issue - thats why I would uninstall the primary IDE channels - to make sure that PIO would not come up. Thx for asking that, though.

Did you say what media you're using - if so I didn't see it.

One member had a similar problem. The was somehow corrupted. All transcoding/compression was compromised. DVDShrink was switching DMA (Set correctly when prog was not running) to PIO in either pri or secondary when it started running. The problem resolved when the IDE driver was deleted and reinstalled.

I am using Memorex 16x DVD+R. Yes I know I know, they have just never given me a problem, though.
I checked the DMA settings while shrink was encoding and there was nothing PIO.
I am at the end of my sanity here.
The laptop is encoding at 800K again. Where is my shotgun...

are you using "Standard IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" for your drivers?
Or, are you using something else like nividia?

Have you tried checking/swapping out your IDE cables and checking the jumper setting on your drive(s)? Lots of Dells are set up to run "Cable Select" rather than the Master/Slave set-up.
It's gotta be frustrating and I sure understand wanting to waste your PC. Maybe it's getting to that point.
It does sound like you have the software sorted out and all the settings are as good as they are going to get. Something with the hardware?
Just my 2 cents.
Edit:
Could you post your last Nero burn log?

allright - going to check hardware now. I just don't get it.
I reboot and explorer takes 10 minutes to start up or I open task mgr and run the explorer process - I do that and I can encode at 1600kb. Sometimes I will reboot and it will come right up (no problems with explorer) and then I only encode at 800KB. Someone bring me the voodoo doll...

Son of a gun. I have no idea why its working consistently now. I have not changed a thing. I never got to check the hardware but I am encoding at a consistent 1 hr and 40 - 50 minutes per movie.
Thanks for all the good ju ju guys!
