If you want burned back up copies to last, does anyone know which media is the best for blanks for dvd -r back ups.
Someone told me either Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. Is this accurate?
Thanks.

Yes, this is indeed very acurrate. Why dont you have a look at this page Media Guide. Next time post in the DVD media forum.

If you are to lazy to look lol :P. Verbatim is also very good comparable to Taiyo Yuden, Maxell and Sony are also very good media to go with.

Those are the most preferred and recommended on the site.

I use Taiyo Yuden and have had great success with them.

Where in the past I used all kinds (memorex/Fuji Film/Sony/Imation) and they all gave me crap backups.

I finally followed the advice of members that have been doing this for a while and bought some Taiyo Yuden and have not used anything else since.

But I have also heard great things about Verbatims as well.

Ok, thanks for all that. I'll switch over to Taiyo Yuden.

I've been doing this for 8 months or so and only using HP DVD -R disks; but, I'm worried because someone told me that two years from now my dvd player won't be able to read any of those disks because they will degrade and become unreadable and that I should be using better disks to record things to.

Thanks again.

Word of advice - get your TYs from Rima.com. I've been buying them mostly from Supermediastore.com and a few from meritline.com. I don't know about the latter, but I've become leery of my SMS-purchased TYs, due to bad quality scans. It may not be SMS' fault, but why chance it?

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Best blank media?

All I ever used and still use are 1st class DVD+R media: Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Hitachi Maxell (MIJ by Hitachi Corp.)

Here's my method: use 1st class DVD+R media + booktyped into DVD-ROM = free of worries = play in all functional DVD players = smart burned.

Verbatim Comment/Question:

I have been using Verbatim 2.4-8x DVD+R DL lately, and have had more problems than I've seen in years (since I used Memorex). I switched to Sony +R (only made in Japan version) or TY's almost two years ago and have had perfect results.

Now when I use the Verbatim DLs, my menus are getting screwed up, and other burn issues like freezing during the movie or looping the FBI warning.

If I burn the Main Movie only, with Nero set to DVD-ROM and two-pass analysis, then I am OK.

I have never had menu problems on single layer TY media.

Anybody know what's up? Is Verbatim still the preferred DL media? Also, the media guide mentioned in this forum string above has been round for a long time - is it still up to date?

I would not buy just any Maxell or Sonys, only the Made in Japan varieties.

Yes - the Sony DVD+R 'made in Japan' discs are TYs and have been consistently perfect.

I am having a hard time these days finding the 'made in Japan' version - I was finding them at CompUSA and Fry's, but now all I can find are 'made in Taiwan'. Anyone know where I might find the good ones?

The TYs from Rima are great, but I prefer the surface of the Sony's. I use colored permanent markers to write on the DVDs and the cake box TYs have a rougher finish and the writing doesn't stand out as much.

I wish I could find DL media with the same quality/consistency as the TYs!

The X16 DVD+Rs Sony MIJ are not Taiyo Yudens. The X8 are.

Edit: Your problem is not the verbatim DLs, it's burning them with Nero. Get imgburn and and use it free to do your DLs.

garmoon - thx! I only use the 8x Sony +Rs. I have several 400 DVD jukeboxes, so I used over 800 Sony TYs to backup my collection - using Shrink/Decrypter/Nero.

Last night I ordered some Verbatim 16x +R and more of the 8x DLs.

I will try Imgburn this weekend. I may also need to get a new burner, the Sony DRU-720A is a couple of years old. But what a great run I had with all of my Sony drives.

Why do you feel that Nero Recode is causing DL issues?

The main problem I had was in the layer break, it would hang and then stop. And others have said they don't burn DLs with Nero. Decrypter and particularly ImgBurn have been better for me. I haven't made a coaster with IMGBurn and my benqs1650s on VerbatimDL+Rs. About 15 of those burns since I don't use them much.

@rbrock - I would have said my Sony drives were trash when I was using Memorex DVD +R media, I was getting one out of five coasters. Since I switched to TY or Sony TY's (made in Japan) I have reached about 99.99% quality burns. I also keep my firmware updated.

@garmoon - I had a 5-pack of Verbatim DLs that I burned with Nero and got excellent results every time. Then when I switched to the 20-pack I started running into problems. I got two 20-packs at the same time from Rima, and both spindles are producing more bad burns than I have seen in years. Main Movie burns work fine still, but the Entire Movie copies are problematic.

Who is making the best burner money can buy? Is it BenQ, Plextor?

It seems like this DVD burning world is 25% hardware, 25% software, 25% blank media, and 25% luck.

I hear some people rave about things that don't work for me, and things that work for me don't work for them. People can't backup a movie I can, and vise versa.

I have owned 5 Sony burners and have been pretty lucky. The only one that sucked was the drive that came with my Sony VAIO (although it was not a Sony drive).

My father-in-law uses Plextor and swears by them.

I dont think luck has that much influence in the DVD burning world, I think luck is much more limited to a 0.9999999%(Im just guessing lol) I guarantee if you use TY a good plextor burner, good software. There is no 25% that because of bad lucks you will get bad burns, so I dont think you should take that much about luck in account.
