It will work until the CPU get too hot and overheats, in which case the PS2 will shut its self down and wait until its cool again. The length of time it takes the CPU to escalate above its thermal limits depend on a few things but mainly the ambient air temperature. This time of year is cool so it might go for a few minus or in a house with no heat it might be just fine. But in the summer time dont expect it to go very long. The console shutting down is simply a failsafe and nothing to be too concerned with. However this needs to be repaired as soon as possible!

Before getting a new fan, test the contact with a multimeter to make sure the fan is bad, and not the power going to the fan.

I have a similar problem. BUT the part of the motherboard that connects to the fan wire is broken. Is there any other way to connect the fan or will it work without it for more then 20 minutes a time or should i get a new one?

If you are comfortable with soldering you should be able to fix it.

Both of these issues can be fixed with a soldering iron. The broken wire can be mended and the broken fan plug can be bypassed and the fan wires soldered directly to the motherboard. However be sure you get the polarity correct or you will be blowing fuses.

Have fun!

I do not have much experience soldering, and actually my lack of experience is probably want caused me to break the fan connector in the first place. I think its about time I buy a slimline anyways. Thanks for the advice however.

I'm not sure of your version PS2 but it is a fat one right? It might be worth getting it repaired, it is of course a simple repair.

Yes it is a fat one. Why is it worth it? I fixed the laser properly but it is only a matter of time before it fully dies out. I didn't expect it to last much longer anyways. I don't know the right people to go to here (toronto, canada) to get it fixed at a reasonable price. It would be cheaper for me to get a new one.

If it is just a broken wire, you could literally fix it with a twisty tie and electrical tape if you had to.

Or you could sell it on ebay and get some cash to put towards a new slimline.

Why would it be worth it! Cuz my friend you can easily install a IDE HDD to the fat PS2's and with a chip like the CC2.0 and HDL you can play your back-ups from the HDD. Its hard to do this with the slim, you need a V12/13 with HDCombo/connect in order to do so. The current V14/15 PSTwo's you have no HDD solution for.

I would consider getting it repaired if possible before selling it on eBay in order to round up cash to purchase a slim.

Have fun!

I broke the fan connector on the motherboard, and it looked too small to solder (at least for me since I'm not that good.) I figured out how to wire the fan to the USB port in the front of the case. It doesn't look pretty, but it works. Here's the directions if you're interested:

Have fun!

i have this same problem, except its not the fan itself, as ive tried it in another console, it could be a fuse.

you could try and solder the fan to the power supply unit(PSU), as it worked fine for me, and is tidy.

the only problem is that the fan is getting to much power, and is noisy and spins fast.

I also i agree that the 50002 series ps2 is the best, as you can run backups straight from a hard disk drive(HDD), and has all the advanced features..

You might be able to figure out how much excess power is going to the fan, and then install a resistor. Although I'm no electronics genius so don't take my word for it, but it seems like it could work to slow down the fan.
