Hello Brain Trust!

Cars continues to crash into my computer causing shut down. Grrrrr. I must re-install IDE driver everytime it crashes or NO compression software will resist the car crash. Then I can backup other movies just fine. Until I try Cars again...

I am using DVDFab because it is the only one that has gotten through the ripping process. Do I need to use FixVTS too? The ripped file is crashing in every compression SW and also corrupts the IDE driver.

Am I pissy? Yes I am! This is driving me nuts.

I suggest going back to driving school and take a refresher course to keep you from crashing your cars, LOL.

Cars has some trickier encryption. I used AnyDVD by slysoft. It's a background ripper. It also pulls off encryption for cds, dvds, sets drives region free, and also has a ripping feature which I haven't tried yet.

You can get a free 21 day trial here:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_...pers/anydvd.cfm

If you have DVD43 on your pc,you'll have to remove it. Both AnyDVD and DVD43 are background rippers and they will clash.

Very simple: Download it,when you see the little red fox icon in your system tray-on the lower right corner of screen, then she's turned on. Procede with ripping Cars using your normal dvd backup process.

Any trouble, there's a few other threads titled cars that you may want to check out. Lots of peeps had trouble with that one. There's also other routes you can use that are with freeware.

Ahhh, the good old days of drivers training. Would that this were as easy! Thanks for such a quick response.

I have tried AnyDVD both in background and ripping to HD. The HD ripping fails in the process of ripping and the background ripping fails in DVDShrink. I am truely an AnyDVD fan but have had it fail here. Update soon???

Off to do my driver's training homework on the other cars threads.

What version of AnyDVD do you have?

I've got 6.1.0.0,but there's a newer update for it.I keep holding off because I'm on dialup, UGGH!

There was also a lot of peeps having trouble with a version that was a couple revisions ago.

6.1.0.1 on the AnyDVD. I just took a chance and ripped to HD again using DVDFab with AnyDVD in the background to spite a single warning in DVDFab asking me not to do so. The driver's training refreshers advised TO do so.

We shall see I am throwing it into the compressor now! I wonder if I should VOBBlank or FixVTS first??????????????? I have the files saved at least for two methods of ripping.

have you updated your firmware lately? Have you made sure there is no multi-tasking going on? How about a log when the error occurs, is there one or does the crash stop it from being created? If you used dvdfab to rip, I would run Vob Blanker. AnyDVD ripper will remove the bad files, dvdfab will not.

I am running only the compression/ripping programs and no multitasking! The Crashes prevent a log, the computer shuts itself off. It does this in CloneDVD2 and DVDShrink AND Shrink2five! Grrrrrr...

I am now running the file that ripped sucessfully with AnyDVD in the background through FixVTS. Should I do VobBlanker too? Do they do different things?

Shoot...forgot!

I am unsure of how to address the current firmware issue. I have had no other problems burning other movies recently, just Cars.

I visited a website about firmware and it had lots of ominous warnings...eeeak.

Is there a good guide for id-ing the correct firmware?

Hola Brain Trust!

Still no luck!

These are the combinations that I have tried. And...when it fails the driver is corrupted (IDE primary) and must be re-installed. Double Grrrrrrrrrrr...

AnyDVD rip to HD, then VobBlanker then FixVTS, then Shrink.
Failed in shrink vts_01_3

DVDFab Decrypter ripped to HD, VobBlanker then FixVTS then CloneDVD
Failed in Clone on yes! vts_01_3
Ran in FixVTS 2x for a total of 3x failed in Clone on vts_01_4.

Ripit4Me Wizard mode, ripped to HD, VOB'd and VTS'd then Shrink
Failed in shrink vts_01_1!
Also failed in Shrink25.

Is Nero recode 2 free?

WHAT THE &*() OVER? I am so confused here. All other movies are fine. The kids bought Pirates of the Dreaded Disney 2 and I was able to back it up just fine??????? Now Cars Crash, who knew?

I have done a ton of reading now and I am still stumped-o-rama. Driver's training failing! Cars crashing... Brain cells melting...

That's a free program. When you open it up and set that burner for drive selection,it'll tell you the actual burner's model # or code-which some burners will give a generic code if they're rebadges. It'll also tell you the firmware version to the right of your burner you have selected.

Example: Drive selected- BENQ DVD DD DW1650 [FW DCIC] DCIC is the firmware version of that drive.

Firmware updates: There is a slight risk. You have to make sure you get the correct firmware version-can be tricky on rebadged drives and dell pcs. Some model #'s will have totally different fw updates and you need to know which one you'll need. Don't update it during a lightning, snow storm,or anything else where the chance of your power will shut off. Leave no discs in that drive. Follow the update instructions to the final T.

Firmware is the programming for drives that controls the writing strategy. It tells your burner how to burn your media, which goes by the MID code of your blank media.

I consider it as a last resort, mainly when you run into a certain batch of media and when it's time to burn,it fails during the lead-in phase-which means the MID code isn't programmed for your current firmware. Playback issues can also be helped with an updated firmware.

Some drives are easy, others may be difficult. My benqs,I open up the zip fold, run the exe file, and then it tells me how to load it-just like installing an ordinary program.

If you have no trouble with other movies, then it sounds more like encryption related,or even a bad pressed disc.Look at the bottom of the disc for any scratches, fingerprints, discoloration,or anything major.

I ripped with dvd shrink/anydvd running/main movie only/ and autoburned with Nero-which is my normal process and no problem. I had an invallid navigation error when AnyDVD was shut off.

This is my regular process too! Very few dvd's fail to back up using it. I am on an HP dv1000 Pavillion Laptop so I should not have dell issues.

No scratches, etc. Kids/Husband are banned from touching movies until they have their own backed up copies. This has saved me $$$$$$dollars$$$$$$$$. Could it still be a bad press and show no damage. I even inspected the thing with my 10x loup.

Not bloody likely! I live WAY out in the wilderness lots of snow. BUT...No electricity from the grid available, only hydropower from my waterwheel. It only goes out if I close the water off. No regular utilities, nothing but satellite internet. It does well unless the snow has whiteout conditions. Ahhhhh the benefits of electrical engineering and personal power production!

Now...if I can only back up a silly kids dvd. Thanks again for all your help. I am going to brave the firmware issue now.

I used AnyDVD/Nero recode (main movie only) to do this movie.
Its the movies with those DVD games in the middle/end of them that seem to be a problem.

I think you have some larger problems than software. I can't pinpoint it though. Could your IDE be shot? Why it only happens with Cars, I don't know.

OK, well it seems like AnyDVD was the one crashing Cars. They issued an update today that fixed this issue. Mine was one of the "rare" cases their bugs effected. Totally a pain. I may go with the freebies and uninstall this program soon.

I have had about 4 pooooooooooooooopy updates for it since about Thanksgiving.

So, if your stuff is acting up? Write down your key. Uninstall AnyDVD. Clean the registry and try another encoder!

What do you think?

Kitty,

I just burned Cars a few mins ago.

This is the process I used:

-AnyDVD to rip to hard-drive
-freedvd to remove some 'stuff'
-dvdfab to retain just the movie
-dvdshrink to compress the movie to fit onto one disk
-Nero to burn

must be a black cloud over you kitty... I personally have had none of these problems accosiated with AnyDVD. Also, you can't just write down you key, you have to save the key file and use it when you re-install.

Some pc's do have trouble with AnyDVD.I've seen people having trouble while leaving it turned on all the time. Most likely a software conflict? They did have a bad version a couple weeks ago.

That's why I leave mine disabled, until I run into problematic encryption.
