I have browsed the site and have seen a lot of questions on this subject. The problem is that I do not understand all the answers! I thought myself tech-savvy, until today.
Anyway, I bought a VHS/DVD-Recorder Combo. I did not realize when I bought it that it would not record the VHS tapes that were protected. I have tapes, from when I was a kid (these I was able to record) and a babysitting teen, that my kids enjoy. These tapes are slowly dying. Before I lose them all (I have looked for them on DVD and they are not available) I want to transfer them to DVD.
I cannot afford to buy a bunch of expensive equipment. I would like to know what would be better:
1.) Buying a new VCR and the macrovi$ion eliminator (name escapes me)
or
2.) Buying a DVD burner for my computer and whatever else I would need to hook up the VHS/DVD player to it.

Could the answer include which option, correct names of items, brands, ballpark prices, and reasons?
If the answers were also in a form that a layman such as myself could understand I would greatly appriciate it. Thank you. Siege26

My 18 grandkids started doing a number on my VHS's so I started looking for an answer. My son set up my system and now I have a system that works great and dosen't tie up my computer. The system I ended up with is a VHS player hooked to "The Clarifier SX "(from Facet Video)which is hooked to a Panasonic DVD recorder which is connected to a small TV so I can check the output. Plug in a VHS, insert a DVD and this stand-alone system works like a charm. Ain't life grand.
Good luck
