I've had my ps2 since day 1 and have had minor problems here and there, but my latest is very weird.
when i turn on my ps2, it does not read the disk. the disk wheel spins slightly and then stops. the screen says reading disk like twice and then nothing. no "disk read errors" , "no disk" or nothing.
i thought it was the wheel motor but by messing with the laser, i got it to work. i pushed the laser all the way to the back away from the wheel. put the disk in and started the console up and it started to spin the disk and worked. .
i put the cover on the laser portion and then the cover on the console and played the game. when i turned off the ps2 and turned it back on it wasnt working again. if i repeat the method to make it work i can play the game, but i doesnt work other wise. any clues.
Yo dude. I've got a similiar problem with mine. It looks like the motor that moves the lens is busted. Mine's is a different problem because it looks like my goddamned lens is busted, but it doesn't move either.
The only thing I think you can do is to procure yourself a new lens part. should be for about $70-80. See if you can grab hold of someone's wrecked PS2s and strip it clean.
If you're going to spend that kind of $ for parts you might as well buy a USED PS2 that works
If you've had the PS2 since day 1 as you say and it is just starting to go now, Then feel lucky.. Systems aren't really meant to hold up all that long.. I had my ver 4 for 5 years before it bit the dust.... So I bought me a ver 7
You also maybe able to find a used Console dealer that will take your old PS2 and give ya deal on another used console with trade in
If you find a trader who'll give you a good price then you'll be really goddamn lucky because I haven't found any yet. Then again, you never know.
I'll stick with my guns though and still advise you to look around for someone's wrecked PS2. There might still be hope if the lens is in working condition. Just remove the lens box from the wrecked system, and stick it in yours. Attach the wires and you're good to go. If you can procure two lenses, then tell me bcoz I still need one.
it may not be the motor, it may only be the little gear that moves it back and forth on the rails that is broken or worn out.

But if this was worn your laser may move to a certain point and then get stuck. If the motor were blown i would think that it would not move at all, and you would not be able to play any games.
check into it more and inspect these parts. I would say if the parts
and install (if needed) cost more than $75 just spend the extra and get a refurbished system. or even better save money and buy a premodded system.
