I do not have a PS2 HDD.
(I know they're capable of more, but I don't feel like investing in both the HDD and the network adapter when I'm mainly going to be playing backups off DVD-R.)

Here's what I do have:

a 100GB portable hard drive (connects via usb)

and a 128MB usb flash drive

If possible, I would probably try watching movies, off the big one.

Should having this stuff affect what modchip I buy?

Do the Crystal Chip, Matrix Infinity, and DMS 4 all work equally well with storage devices like this?

I have a v6 if that matters.

I know there's apps and homebrew, but none of that has really caught my eye.

well, not really with an external drive
you will need a disc called USB Extreme to run the hard drive
But those three chips should all be able to run homebrew apps
and ELF exploits.

Truth be told getting a DMS4 Pro and an internal IDE hard drive
is a better option though as it will run faster and that
chip uses a flash called ToxicOS which has built in software
to run the internal drive and apps
DMS4 Pro i think also has a ToxicOS Mega Pack that you can
get to run USB devices as well

Another option is the Crystal Chip 2.0 which used Boot Manager as its OS which can boot ELF's directly from a USB drive. You can install HDloader which will do all that ToxicOS can do when playing games you have backed up to an IDE HDD. The CC2.0 also has a mega pack full of ELF's have a look here

With Boot Manager you can directly access your USB drive as well as the PS2's MC and HDD(as long as the drive is compatible with the PS2) and boot apps like ULE and SMS which are very useful.

Have a look here for PS2 homebrew and what they can do for you.
