Max Action Replay Media converter etc

I have a max action replay dealy with the media player/converter, iv been able to get it to work burning disks to play on my tv via the ps2 but someone recently gave me the idea of playing media though my external hard drive hooked up through the USB port.

I copied the files from the memory stick that came with the M.A.R disk set etc and downloaded the newest ep of 24 season 6. Firstly i tried playing an unconverted file and it didn't give me anything, then i tried converting the file and again it said there was no media on the hard drive (well it thinks the hard drive is the stick...)

What else do i have to do to my HD to make it work or is it the media file? Is this even possible? I cant see why it isn't as they say that the files should work via the usb stick anyway and the external HD is just a very large stick right? As far as im aware i moved all the stuff from the usb stick to the hd and it did recognize the hd as the stick (I tried it before i moved the M.A.R files onto the hd and it said it could not find the stick)

So yeah, any help would be muchos appreciated, im determined to get stuff working as then i can watch all my media files on the tv instead of the pc.

what format are the movies you are trying to watch in?
Like AVI, VOB (video TS) or similar
I really do not use my PS2 for much stuff like that since
my Xbox with Xbox Media Center can pretty much play anything
and even stream media from my PC without having to put it
on a discs or the hard drive.

Well i use whatever, i was trying to use AVI earlier, but it shouldnt matter since i am converting it using the max action replay program. What im asking is how i get any file to work :)
