Sony today announced that they have sold 1 million Playstation 3s in North America since the launch of the console six weeks ago.
That makes the Playstation 3 the fastest selling home console Sony has ever launched.
Microsoft sold 600,000 of their Xbox 360s from their November launch to the second week in January.
"SCEA went to great lengths to help meet demand for PS3, including airlifting systems into North America on a weekly basis to ensure a steady stream of units were available to consumers throughout the holiday season," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "The fact that we were able to reach the one-million mark faster than our top-selling platform, the PS2, further validates the strength of the PlayStation brand and our belief that consumers are ready to experience true high-definition gaming." ... "Reaching the one million mark for PS3 is the first of many major milestones for us as we head into a new year. Even more impressive, is that we were able to accomplish this feat while successfully managing two other gaming platforms--PS2 and PSP," said Tretton. "With three PlayStation platforms now available to gamers, 2007 will be about software and delivering innovative, new experiences and award-winning franchises to consumers, both through retail and through our online PLAYSTATION Network."
Wow. Maybe all of those PS3s sitting around have more to do with ramped up production than dwindling desire. Brian Crecente
LAS VEGAS, January 8, 2007 -At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2007 in Las Vegas, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced that more than one million units of its recently launched PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3?) computer entertainment system have been sold in to the retail channel in North America. The company successfully achieved this milestone by the end of the 2006 calendar year, just six weeks after the product was introduced on November 17, 2006.
PS3 has been selling-out at retail outlets across North America since it was launched. This high consumer demand drove the PS3 to reach the one-million mark before its predecessors, the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system and the PS one game console - both systems have shipped more than 213 million units of hardware and more than 2.1 billion pieces of software worldwide.
"SCEA went to great lengths to help meet demand for PS3, including airlifting systems into North America on a weekly basis to ensure a steady stream of units were available to consumers throughout the holiday season," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "The fact that we were able to reach the one-million mark faster than our top-selling platform, the PS2, further validates the strength of the PlayStation brand and our belief that consumers are ready to experience true high-definition gaming."
PS3 wasn't the only hot gift this holiday season, the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system continues to enjoy record-breaking sales in North America. In the first quarter of 2007, PS2 will continue to fuel industry growth with the highly anticipated release of the MLB 07 The Show and God of War 2 titles. PlayStation-branded entertainment and gaming content that will be shown in the Sony booth at CES 2007, includes:
FORMULA ONE CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION - PS3
MLB 07 The Show - PS3, PSP
MotorStorm -- PS3
LAIR -- PS3
Heavenly Sword -- PS3
Gran Turismo HD - PS3 downloadable
Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters - PSP
Killzone -- PSP
SOCOM: Fire Team Bravo - PSP
Other features on display will include "Remote Play" for the PS3, which allows the consumer to utilize their PSP to access content on their PS3 hard drive, including movies, television shows, videos and music. A full demonstration of the PLAYSTATION®Network, and PLAYSTATION®Store for the PS3, as well as Location Free TV? for the PSP, will also be shown.

Congrats to Sony, but I don't really think this means much. It just means that they were able to ship 1M into stores, not homes. Also, they are only talking about North America, so they should've been able to ship more in NA than MS, since the 360 launched in 3 areas, not 2. I'm not downplaying Sony's achievement, just saying that it seems like a lot of wordplay going on here, at least to me.

Three cheers for Sony, wait hold that thought. What's more important, getting your launch numbers up or current numbers? The 360 has outsold the PS3 estimated 2 mil to Sony's PS3's 750,000 units since November. Thus winning the holiday war, Even Nintendo's Wii sold 1.8 mil units since November doubling Sony's effort. Keep finding the little bits of postivies for the PS3 and justify spending $600 plus on a system. It will help you sleep better at night. I'm not hating on the PS3, it the superior system due to it's hardware alone. I jsut dislike PS3 owners who throw out little tid bits and points. Til Next time.

Well, for starters, they are talking about sales to retail, not to customers, and a lot of stores still have PS3's sitting on their shelves, not in peoples homes. Also, like I said, these are only north america numbers, not worldwide, they haven't included Europe yet, so they should obviously have more units to ship to NA since they cut out a whole continent. Again, I'm not downplaying the launch or the PS3, just saying that this article just feels like it's had the Sony PR spin on it. MS and Nintendo do the same thing though.

When you read that page it did say that 360 numbers was going to be flawed because they started with Nov.17 PS3 launch then a week later Wii launch so that explain why, plus a year head start has alot to do with it.But if you think Microsoft going to be on that hill for long your crazy.Hell Wii sold 2 million console in a month.Plus PS3 beat there launch numbers compare to what PS2 the highiest selling console ever & also beat out 360 launch sales.Plus not to even bring up the horrible sales of 360 in Japan which is the biggiest market.Right now i would have to give it to Nintendo because they are kicking everyone butt & that slim 10.5 million console lead Microsoft got will be caught by Wii by the summer.

That is only if the Wii keeps going at this pace, and to be honest I don't think it'll make it. I'm not knocking the Wii, but it just isn't as great as everyone is claiming it to be. The only really good games on Wii are all mini-game based. The only other good titles(to me) are all mini-game based. Mini-games are only fun with a lot of friends. Now, I've played Wii Bowling and it was fun, hella fun with 4 people, but give me an hour alone with the game, and I'll find my way back to Okami/FFXII. Plus as of right now(with all the dogging of PS3s graphics), Wii's is just horrendous. Now, I know it shouldn't be as good as Ps3/360, but it at least should be better looking than Xbox, and hell a PS2 port even beat the Wii graphically(Splinter Cell Double Agent). Now, sure Twilight Princess is good(a must-have, but still not the end all be all game everyone makes it out to be). But with the horrendous Wii camera, I would much rather have that game on a GCN, which is about 200 bucks cheaper than a Wii.
As of right now, I don't think either of the newest ones are worth it, and in the long run I think only the PS3 will be worth it. I'll hold judgment until the Wii actually gets some really good and non mini-gamed games to write it off or accept it, but as of right now the must have titles for me will be on PS3, and only on PS3. Then again, Mass Effect looks freaking awesome.

Agreed.
Personally, I think the wii looks like a lot of fun, and I'll probably get one as soon as I start actually seeing them in stores, but I don't really think of it in the same catagory as I do the 360 and PS3, I don't know why, maybe it's just that the games and the way you play it are so much different, which is cool.

@kasper45 Sony Didn't make enough PS3's on launch, Nintendo make many, many, many Wii's. If Sony had made a lot then it probably would of outsold Nintendo's Console the Wii but Sony did not make as many and also Nintendo's Wii is like a little chip to them they make them probably in about like 5 minutes. PS3 is a big Console that weighs 7KG and thats is what makes the production longer.
P.S. I'm writing this on my PS3 browser and it's a good console.
EDIT: lol, before i put @Kasper59 but i changed it to @Kasper45.

I own a Wii and a 360, Nintendo isn't selling their graphics. Then know they are dead last in that category. They are selling a different gaming experience, which after a few beers is pretty fun. The one thing Sony should be but can't say is that fact that the PS3 is doing so well without a Killer-app. They don't have a system selling game yet such as a Halo, Gears of War or Zelda.(it took me 38 hours to beat Zelda by the way, well worth the $$$) They lost the Grand theft Exclusivity contract and now it will be released across formats. I will eventually own all 3 systems, but I do not NEED a PS3 right now. There is no must have/must play game in their launch titles.

I hear people say that there is no reason to get a PS3 why not you can still turn in you old PS2 for a trade in.Also PS3 backwards compatibility is a alot more stable they 360 hell Microsoft was not going to support backwards compatibility until fan's complain right fullly so.Also God of War 2 is coming Feb 14.So all i did was upgrade and Sony are still going full speed with making game on the PS2 so if there isn't any game out that you dont like on the PS3 you can kill time playing your PS2 games on PS3.

Why suggest trading in your ps2 for a ps3 just to play your ps2 games? That don't make sence.

I believe the Wii released with the new Zelda. While it's not a game you or I would prefer, I'm pretty sure it was the "must have" with Nintendo fans.

And Really, TP isn't as great as people make it out to be. I mean no more than a 9.0. Definitely not at the height of the 10s and 9.5s I've read. Only really truly "fair" rating I have seen has been Gamespot's(which people dog all the time).

This should be easy, one word HALO!. Halo was a launch title for Xbox and sold that console. I know it was the first game I purchased for the Xbox. It took some time to catch on and once it did, look out. It didn't sell as many consoles as Halo 2 probably aided in selling ,but every great trilogy has to start somewhere. I also think the Xbox was at the reduced price at the point of H2's release. Next Question!

It's alright man, you can't be faulted for mis-information. That is why you read sites like us here at aD! So as to get more info (although you can still get misleading stuff about anything anywhere), you just have to do some research of your own and remember as to where it is coming from so as it is not biased.

And everyone who had a 64 had that game.
