Will Motorola DCT6416 work with my cable company?

I have the opportunity to buy a the Motorola DCT6416 III (only usually available as rental from my calbe company-Time Warner) off someone locally. We both have the same cable company. Is it safe to say that I can simply hook it up and it will work? Or does my cable company have to enable something on their end. In other words, I'm asking if the DVR is enabled physically or through the digital calbe somehow. I don't want to get stuck with a unit that will not work.
