Toshiba D-VKR3 won't read recorded DVDs

I have had a Toshiba VKR3 for about 2 years with little use. Recently, I got ambitious and started my project to convert many VHS tapes to DVD only to find my DVD wouldn't record. It also will not play DVDs previously recorded on this unit. It will however play commercial DVDs.

It has always been finicky about playing DVDs created on my PC so I suspect the laser was/is weak or shot at this point. I called Toshiba repair and they will fix it for $139.95 but won't sell me a drive unit to repair it myself.

I cleaned the DVD drive (opened the case and the top of the DVD and cleaned the inside (pretty clean) and specifically the DVD lens. It appeared clean. That did not change the behaviour at all.

First question is does anyone have any ideas on getting this working?

Second question is where can I buy a replacement DVD unit for my D-VKR3? It is a simple replacement exercise and I think the problem lies in the DVD drive itself. Everything else works as expected.
