Sorry about double posting, but I wasn't getting any responses in the other thread.
I haven't been on here in awhile. I recently got turned onto the HD Advance craze by a friend, so I'm trying to make it happen for my PS2. It is an old (4-5 years) fat chipmodded V4 PS2 with a practically dead laser that reads PS1 games and PS1/2 backups fine, but refuses to read some real official PS2 games. I have a couple of questions:
1. Will opening my PS2 and exposing my modchip to light fry it?
2. Is it worth it to clean / realign my busted laser or should I just buy a new one (are they hard to install)?
3. What is the maximum supported HDD size for HD Advance? (I think it is 200GB, but people have posted saying it works for them with bigger HDDs)
4. Does HD Advance auto shut off the PS2 laser when booting games from the HDD? (Or maybe I should just take the HD Advance disc out after it loads)
5. Where should I buy everything from? (Network Adapter, 200GB Maxtor HDD, HD Advance) Please try to find the best quality for the cheapest price.
6. What is the fastest way to put games onto the HDD not using the PS2 laser?
As always, mad props to everyone here. You guys are modern day heroes to me. If I can get this to work, it will be my ultimate dream and system come true.

1. Will opening my PS2 and exposing my modchip to light fry it?
LOL, no it will not fry it, but unless you know what your doing do not open your PS2 and start fooling with things.
2. Is it worth it to clean / realign my busted laser or should I just buy a new one (are they hard to install)?
yes, it is worth cleaneing it first. Then if it is no different trying to allign it. You may get it working fine again with a little time and effort and save yourself a good amount of money.
3. What is the maximum supported HDD size for HD Advance? (I think it is 200GB, but people have posted saying it works for them with bigger HDDs)
"The new HDAdvance 3.0 supports up to 200GB HDD"
the bigger drives may work, but it will only recognize the 200GB limit of te hard drive
4. Does HD Advance auto shut off the PS2 laser when booting games from the HDD? (Or maybe I should just take the HD Advance disc out after it loads)
you will most likely leave the HD Advance disc in the drive. You will need it every time you boot to load your games from the hard drive
5. Where should I buy everything from? (Network Adapter, 200GB Maxtor HDD, HD Advance) Please try to find the best quality for the cheapest price.
this you will have to do on your own, start searching
6. What is the fastest way to put games onto the HDD not using the PS2 laser?
there is no faster way. there are two other method both requiring some work on your part.
1. Winhiip, a program you put on your PC. You have to take out the hard drive and instll it as the slave drive on your PC, then put the games on, then put it back into the PS2.
2. setting up an FTP server between the PC and PS2, you then connect them with a crossover cable and transfer the games that way. this takes some slightly above basic networking skills
all that being said if you do not fix the laser first you may run into a problem of not being able to read the HD Advance disc an use the hard drive at all. You may have to look into this but they may have what is called a memory card exploit that you can use, this will be just like HD Advance but on your memory card so the PS2 will not need to read any discs other than what you need to put on the hard drive. Cleaning and adjusting the laser may either fix it, or at least buy you enough time to get the games on the hard drive.
here is a guide for doing both.
http://www.exploitstation.com/
there is also information on the exploits i mentioned at that page.

Thanks a lot :)! I opened it up today and cleaned the laser and the spinning hub, everything is working perfectly again. Everything you told me is as I figured, which makes me feel better lol. Seemingly getting everything is going to run me about $200 or so, but this might be the most worthwhile $200 I'll ever have to spend.
1 hopefully last question:
1. Which is the most reliable place to buy from in your guys opinion? (or at least a place that sells it in the US):
A. Modchipworld.com
B. Consolesource.com
C. Playstationdirect.com
D. Allmodchip.com
Nevermind, found a list of US stores that have it with much better prices!
Only sad thing is the void sticker left void on the bottom of my PS2 ;(

You have a V4, there is no need worrying about the warranty sticker, yours ran out a very long time ago.
as far as a good place to get a mod chip installed, or PS2 repair in the US there is only one site i would tell people about.
Teammodders.com which is where i know people and have all my work done. I have had them do the following with perfect results:
1. install a new laser and DMS4 Pro chip in a V5/6 PS2
2. take my slimline and put it into a HD Combo case with 250GB hard drive.
if you are willing to spend the money then here is what i would get.
DMS4 Pro SE modchip and a 300GB hard drive, plus the network adapter if teammodders doesn't have one they can sell you. (if the laser still gives you problems a new one may be needed as well)
The hard drive i would buy at Newegg.com or Fry's.com as you can get a good deal. Then i would contact Teammodders (this may take a few days to respond as he is currently working on a big project) and tell him what you want and ask for a price quote.
Then you can send the PS2 and hard drive to them and let them do all the work.
But the above is correct too, for $220 you can buy a used V7 (best model ever made) with a modchip already in it at teammodders. It may even have the network adapter so all you would need after that is the hard drive.

I'm just saying it is probably going to cost me about $200 to get everything for the HD Advance mod.
So far, the best prices I can find are:
1. PS2 Network Adapter (1st party) USED: $50 and up
2. Maxtor 200GB HDD NEW: Around $60 and up
3. HD Advance (US Store) NEW: $27 and up
So actually looking at my total, it will actually cost me about $140, not bad at all.
NOW SOME NEW QUESTIONS:
1. Looking at teammodders.com, they have modchips that use something called toxic bios and they claim they don't need HD Loader or HD Advance anymore, is this true?
2. Can the toxic bios modchips support HDD sizes bigger than 200GB?
3. Which one is better, the toxic bios modchip or a simple modchip (mine is already modded, not sure what the chip is called though ;() with HD Advance?
4. Why is the V7 the best PS2 Model?
5. Finally, will these toxic bios mod chips take care of the PSX bouncing screen problem? I sent my PS2 away for sony to fix it before I got it modded and I don't want to have this problem again.
I'm just trying to have the ultimate PS2 mod here since it is my favorite system, I need to know the best way to pimp it out and want to use the biggest HDD possible.

1. Looking at teammodders.com, they have modchips that use something called toxic bios and they claim they don't need HD Loader or HD Advance anymore, is this true?
100% true, it is called a DMS4 Pro SE modchip, it is flashed with ToxicOS which has a built in HD loader, built in cheat device, built in homebrew(ELF File) loader and other features. It is the same chip i have.
2. Which one is better, the toxic bios modchip or a simple modchip (mine is already modded, not sure what the chip is called though ;() with HD Advance?
DMS4 Pro SE is one of the top chips out there right now. So it would be better and have more features than an older chip
3. Why is the V7 the best PS2 Model?
It had a strong laser and ran forever, i still have one as you can see by my sig below. and i bought it when they first came out years ago.
I'm just trying to have the ultimate PS2 mod here since it is my favorite system, I need to know the best way to pimp it out.
best ways:
1. DMS4 Pro SE modchip
2. 300GB internal hard drive
3. make or buy a customer case, or just go to decalgirl.com and buy a skin.
4. you can add led lights and all kinds of unique mods but just the chip and the large hard drive will do it.
I even have a power converter and 2-7.2" LCD screens for playing mine in the car :)
But all things aside, i love my totally modded PS2, but my modded Xbox will beat it in about every catagory. It can do so much more than my PS2 can.
here are some custome consoles, including my skinned V12 before i had it put into an HD Combo case.

More questions of course:
1. What is the biggest HDD size the DMS4 Pro S.E. can handle?
2. Do all HDD's work with the DMS4 Pro S.E.?
3. Is there a guide that tells you how to use all the features of the DMS4 Pro S.E.?
4. Is the user interface of the DMS4 Pro S.E. easy to handle for people that aren't really technical savvy?
5. How does booting games from the HDD work?
6. How do you put the games onto the HDD?
7. Can the modchip in my current PS2 be replaced with the DMS4 Pro S.E.?
8. What would you say is the normal GB size of a PS2 game (Also a range from highest to lowest would be nice)?
