Hello,

I have IE7.0. Everytime that I try and close an Internet Explorer window, it won't close normally. I always get the "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem. We are sorry for the incovenience" message. It doesn't matter whether I'm closing the Main IE window, or if I'm closing a Pop up, I always get the same error. But when I try and exit out of IE7.0 entirely, it never closes without giving me the error message. I downloaded IE7.0 again but it didn't help. I ran a HijackThis scan the the following is my logfile. I do not want to delete anything without someone knowledgable looking at it first. Would someone mind reviewing the logfile and let me know if there's something suspicious I need to "fix"?

Thanks very much!
Melissa

Hi mwerstein, and welcome to aD!

First, you're running HijackThis from a temporary folder. This means, when you fix an entry, a backup will not be created. Unzip(extract) the HijackThis.exe from the zip file to a permanent folder.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download the following programs.
CCleaner
Spybot Search and Destroy
AVG Anti-spyware (30-day trial)

Install and run CCleaner.

Note: If you do not want Yahoo! Toolbar uncheck the option when installing.
Open CCleaner.
Click Options > Advance > uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
Close all windows.
Click Cleaner > Run Cleaner.

Install and update Spybot.

After installing, open Spybot.
Click "Check for Updates".
Click "Search for Updates".
Check all and click "Download Updates".
After updating, close Spybot. We will run the scan in safe mode.

Install and update AVGAS.
Install and open AVGAS.
Click "Update" then click "Start update".
After updating, close AVGAS. We will run the scan in safe mode.

Note: Print or copy these instructions to Notepad and save them. You will be in safe mode and can't access the internet.
Restart your computer in safe mode(press F8 upon boot, select "Safe Mode" from menu and press Enter).

Run Spybot.
Open Spybot.
Click "Check for Problems".
When it finishes, click "Fix selected problems".
Right click inside the window and select "Copy results". (not full report)
Paste them into Notepad and save them.

Run AVGAS.
Open AVGAS and click "Scanner".
Click "Complete System Scan".
When it finishes scanning, set all items to "Quarantine".
Click "Apply All Actions".
Click "Save Report" and save it to the desktop.

Restart in normal mode.
Please post back with the Spybot log, the AVGAS report, and a new HijackThis log.

Yes, that tells me a lot. :-)

Go here and click "Remove CoolWebSearch" to download CWShredder.
Open cwshredder.exe
Click "Fix ->"
After scanning and cleaning click "Next ->".
Click "Exit".

Restart your computer.
How are things now?

Hello,

I did the fix and it told me that my computer did not have "CoolWebSearch" on it.

What is inside this folder?
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Favorites\Insurance

Are you still getting an error upon closing IE?

Hi,

It was 3 insurance links. I deleted them and the whole folder and then restarted. Still getting the closing problem with IE7.

I'm baffled.

I'm starting to think this is an IE problem and not related to malware. Let's do a few more checks to be sure.

Go here to download SilentRunners to the desktop.
You may have to right-click and choose Save target as(IE) or Save Link As(Firefox).
Double-click Silent Runners.vbs to run it.
When the prompt appears, click Yes
After the scan is complete the log will be on the desktop.

Download Rootkit Revealer from here.
Create a new folder, named RKR, in C:\
Extract the files to the new folder.
Open RootkitRevealer.exe.
Close all other windows and click "Scan".
Important: Leave the computer idle while the scan runs.
When the scan is finished, click File > Save... to save the text file to the C:\RKR\ folder.
Please post the log in your next reply along with the SilentRunners log.

Okay, both logs came up clean, so let's try rolling back to IE6 to see if that will make a difference.

Uninstall IE7 via Add/Remove Programs.
Restart and see if the error still exists.

I uninstalled IE7 and a Windows Security Update and it stopped giving me the error message when I close IE6 out. What does this mean?
Thanks.

Most likely means there is a conflict between IE7 and another program on your computer. You can try to reinstall IE7 and if the error comes back, roll back to IE6 again.

There were many major security updates with IE7 and it is recommended you use it, but since you can't without an error, the best thing you could do is switch to Firefox or Opera.

Are you experiencing any more problems or symptoms?

I have the exact same problem and am using IE6, so it's probably not a function of IE7. The problem began after I installed Norton Internet Security 2007. I notice that you have the UIBHO.dll in your list. This symantec dll file came up one time on the error message (which is how I found your post). However, since the uninstall/reinstall solution worked for you, I'm going to try reinstalling IE6 or upgrading to IE7.

So far so good. I am not using IE7 again as it was included in an update. No more problems upon closing to date. Thanks for all your help!

The reverse fix also worked. I'm now running IE7 with no problems (although I'm not sure that I wouldn't prefer IE6.
