Hello!

I'm having quite a problem with my DRU 710-A and ripping cds. It seems crippled: it starts out ok, but 5 to 10 seconds in, it seems to stagger, wind down, and rip at something like 2-4x, and a belaboured 2-4x at that. The final product, the flac file, is all glitchy with pops and buzzes even though the cd itself is clean. I should also mention that the drive itself gets very loud, a veritable roar.

I've upgraded to the newest available firmware, BYX5, and that hasn't fixed the problem. It rips DVDs just fine, and also writes data to them as it should. The problem is with CDs. I'm at a loss as to how I can overcome the problem.

Does anyone have a clue what the problem could be?

Thanks!

You are doing 2 processes, so I suggest you separate them into individual steps. This will help identify where the problem is.

I suggest you rip the CD to .wav files on your hard drive. This will check the CD performance.
Then encode these files to .flac and see how the performance is.

What type of CD are you trying to rip?
What program are you using?

I've used every program I can think of, including EAC and Easy Cd Extractor. I'm trying to rip some classical cds that blend from track to track. I used to be able to do so with this drive!

Platy767: I did rip to .wav and the problem remains.

No, it rips dvds alright though. It used to burn cds fine. It's skippy when it plays a perfectly clean cd. I ran a cleaner through it a few days ago.

I meant laser cleaner, a disc.

As for replacing the entire drive, that wouldn't be correcting the problem.

When I put a cd in, it's annoying and jumpy: can't play it smoothly--this is a disc right out of the shrink wrap. Doesn't want to play them, and doesn't want to rip them.

Replace DRU 710-A.
Get rid of lens cleaner. I think they do more damage to a drive than they do good.
Your drive has a laser for DVD & a separate laser for CD.
(At least take it out & have it tested)
Good luck.
