Mechacon always crashing

Hi there.
I have a PS2 modded with Mars Pro GM805 chip + Matrix Pic fix + diode protection. It worked a couple of years, but lately (a few days ago) it stopped reading any DVD, either original or backup. It reads CDs but not DVDs. I put the disc, start the console and automatically puts itself in standby mode. I think it's the PIC fix working, as it discovers a mechacon crash situation and enters in action.
My question is: Why is this happening? Did the modchip get faulty? Is the laser burnt (I don't think so IMHO)?

Well I hate to inform you of this but that is exactly how the PIC fixes work. Your lasers DVD side is most likely so shot that the PIC fix is not picking up any activity my the laser thus giving a false positive that the mechacon has crashed. Its time for a new laser my friend. This is another benefit of the PIC fixes like the Comsoft V4 and neoXIV, you will for sure know when its time to get a new laser.
Dont worry about trying to adjust these laseres either. They are considered pretty much disposable and they are already set to fairly high settings from factory, so when they are gone .... they really are gone. Not much adjustment should need to be made to the new laser you get as well, other then maybe removing the anti static solder blod.
Have fun!

Thanks for your promptly answer.
So, it's the laser, almost for sure. Well... bad news, but at least I know what the failure is. :)
Since the laser diode is only one, why is it possible to read CDs without a glitch? That puzzled me: if the laser had kaputted, it won't read anything, but only DVDs give problem. Is that ok?

Incorrect, there is a DVD side and a CD side of all PS2 lasere diodes. This is why you have a DVD pot and a CD pot to adjust. Its very common for a PS2 laser diode to stop reading one format but still read the other.

Excellent (in fact, no, what a pity!).
I will order a new laser unit, then (sobs).

Is it difficult to identify and remove that antistatic solder blob?

NO, with a soldering iron and desoldering braid its very easy.

Well... situation resolved.
It was the laser unit.
I have even an easier install procedure, since the laser came previously tested, so no blobs to remove.
Thanks a lot for the support.

Well...
After a week of flawless laser, the console is "back to black". Yesterday it simply stopped reading ANYTHING, CD or DVD. It tries to read, for a while, and then says "Could not read disc". I tried using an original Audio CD and it worked fine, but rebooting made the console show the same problem with that CD. I had no original DVD at hand to try, only backups.
Zero reading.
My PStwo SPCH-70012 has the diode PCB fix and the PIC fix both installed.
Now what?

Are you licensed to use explosive's. Maybe now that you have the new laser in try adjusting the pot on it.

Yep.
I did it last week, and now the console works flawlessly again. I hope this pot adjusting doesn't bring the laser lifespan down a month.

Well if your adjusting the pot on a new laser it will be fine it is when it starts to die and you adjust it that is when you are really only prolonging the inevitable.

Well, I hope so. Console has worked fine so far, and I pray for the laser to last at least two years. After that, I will surely switch to XBox, since the PS2 has brought me good moments, but the X is far more moddable and has the same good titles.
