Avi to dvd conversion

I've downloaded some dvd files which I would like to burn onto disc to free up space on my drive.
I will have to convert them so that they play on my dvd player. Can anyone take me through exactly how to do this and tell me what program I will need to convert the files.
Been on this for 2 days and am very frustrated.
What discs should I be using to burn onto ?

what format are the files in now?
Are they already dvd compatible or are they something else.

They are in AVI format and I don't know if they are dvd compatible.

before you do anything.(no disrespect borhan) run your files through avicodec and post the properties into your next post.
We'll tackle it from there

Can you explain what these discs are and how they differ from the CD-R ones that I was going to use.
I also have DVD R discs that I was hoping to use.

if you are using cdr then your files are going to be needed to convert to mpeg1 (VCD, scvd) not really good quality and you can only store 700meg on them.So if your movie is 1.9 gig you will need to split the film into 2 discs.
HOWever if you are using dvd r discs you have 4.38 gig to play around with and there fore your files need to be converted to mpeg2 which is the dvd movie format.You will be able to get it on 1 disc generally
ritek and taiyo yuden discs are more or less the elite brands and recommended as they fail rarely, well quality wise.They do both cdr and dvd

This is what it is after conversion I think.
Not very good at this so please bear with me thanks

this is not converted yet , this is the properties of the file.The other post above this is irrelevant so you can delete it.You will notice the page is stretched now so please re edit that post.
heres a program that will convert it to mpeg2.All you need to is load your file into it and press convert.It will do the rest for you and convert to mpeg2.Then use the burning engine embedded into it or your own to get it to disc.
