I have a bizarre problem. I have a slim PS2 with a flip-top cover. Yesterday, I was able to load games fine in Swap Magic 3.6, both CD and DVD. Then, late yesterday, though Swap Magic loaded fine, when I tried to load games, I got a lot of weird clunking noises, even on games I'd successfully loaded before. Today, sometimes I'm not even able to get Swap Magic to load (though this is rare), but I am getting clunking noises (the laser is just clunking back and forth, not moving all over like it should), "Not a valid PS2 disc," and other issues.
I'm using Maxell DVD-Rs, and Memorex CD-Rs, burned in Nero 7. They worked fine (I even re-burned the ones that didn't work initially, and they worked), but now only Gradius III & IV works for me (and I don't know how much longer that will happen)...the rest, even the ones I got to work, are screwing up.
Normal, commercial games still work 100% fine, but Swap Magic is suddenly not working properly. What gives?
Is it an issue with the laser? If so, why would the laser screw up within 24 hours, and why are normal commercial games not affected?
I've also heard that the spring in the cover may be too long, but why then was it working yesterday?
What do I do? It worked yesterday, and now I'm suddenly having all sorts of problems. I wanna play my backups...
[EDIT: Turns out I had overtightened the screws on my cover. Loosening them, and spraying all the dust out of the insides of the system and cleaning out the fan with Endust for good measure, fixed the problem.]
