Weird issue burning CD-R's

This one has me a little stumped. I demuxed a concert DVD using Rejig and ended up with WAV files which I then converted to MP-3's using Bsweet (awesome software). When I tried to create a CD playable on CD machines I ran into problems. First I tried RecordNow (v4.4) which would convert the MP-3s (the wav's were the wrong bitrate). Recordnow stopped before filling the disk and gave me an error. I tried realplayer with the wav files - same thing. I tried MS media player with the wav files - same thing. Ah must be my discs or recorder. I then tried a CD-RW and presto MS media player created the disk from the wav files just fine. Then I was able to copy the CD-RW to CD-R.

Why didn't the CD-Rs work directly? If it was a CD writer problem why did the CD-RW work and then it was able to copy to CD-R? I thought the CD-R's were suspect after 5 coaster (yes I'm a little slow an stubborn) but the sixth one worked from the CD-RW copy. Baffled...
