I have a PS2 v5 and want to get it moded but don't know what route I should take the more I research the more i'm getting confused.

These are the ways i'm thinking of going.

1: Hard drive with hd loader program(at least 120g)

2: solderless mod chip(call me lazy just don't want to deal with a bunch of wires.)

3: magic swap(but realy don't want to deal with swaping discs all the time and would get a filp top case if went this route)

Here are my questions.

1: With the hd method do i also need a mod chip or just get hd loader or simular program?

2: Can I also play disc backups or just games that i've downloaded into the hd?

3: What solderless chip is the best?

4: What are some good online stores to buy from?

5: Is there any other options that I didn't think of?

6: Besides the pain of swaping discs what performs better magic swap vs modchip or should I say is it realy worth the extra cost to get a modchip?

I would like to keep this project under $100 if possible and think the hd route would be the most expensive followed by the modchip then a magicswap being the cheapest.I know somebody that can get me a discount at best buy for a hard drive so that should save me some money if I go that route.

What version is your PS2? The only 100% solderless modchip solution is the DMS4 EZI, which many like to call the EZFry because of its notorious habit of bricking perfectly good consoles. I would recommend getting a pro to install a chip for you if you want to go that route.

HDAdvance is not a bad solution but not as good of a combination as a modchip (like the Crystal Chip 2.0) and the current patched HDLoader.

You can always look into the exploit as well which isnt a bad solution if you want to go real cheap. Have a look here for good info on the exploit

Ok I think I'm going to go with the Hard drive option with either hdadvance or hdextreme. I still need a network adapter and a hard drive will go to best buy for the hard drive then order the network adapter and hdextreme from some where online. But still have some questions.

1: If I can't play a burned game from a disc with this method can I transfer a downloaded game from my computer to my ps2 hdd and play that way?

2: Can I get magic swap and save a backed up game to hdd to play later without using magic swap disc again?.

When I can find some one locally to install a modchip for me I will get that done also.
Any other suggestions like programs to use to run in hdd, brands of hdd to use or stay away from, websites to buy from.

Just my 2 cents...... The "EXTRA" time spent swapping disks is a total of maybe 40 seconds standing at the console waiting. Flip-top box was the way to go except that I have no fingernails and cannot grab the disk to take out. Other than that, that $40.00 was well spent.
