i'v just brought an X-Ecuter 2.2 lite
& its says it is Preflashed with the legal Cromwell (Linux) BIOS. will this let me play backups or do i need 2 reflsah it with Linux boot flashing software OzXFlasher?

I'd just flash with the Xecutor 4977 bios.

To download:
1) Connect to IRC using a program called MIRC (from download.com)
2) Connect to an EFNET server
3) Go to channel #xbins
4) Follow the instructions
5) Download what you need from the FTP site

xIso == bad, use Craxtion with GDFImage
