i have the ps2 v12 and tried to up the volts on the laser but afraid to do it too much cd work and ps1 games work but ps2 games and dvd do not work iv turned the one screw for the dvds (hope its the right one says dvd undernieth it but anyway the cd will do a half turn then a quarter turn back and keep doing it what is wrong?
Make sure that all the ribbon cables going to the spindle motor, laser and snake drive motor, and securely attached, a loose cable can soemtimes cause this problem.
It could be a worn out laser, but its always best to check, I opened up my slimline once, and when I put it back together i left the ribbon cable going to the spindle motor half out, so it was doing the same thing, not reading any disk, spinning a bit, then stopping, i thought NOOOOO. LOL.
Then i opened it, and had a look, and found that it was the ribbon cable.

Oh yes for sure check it out! But I thought he said it still boots PS1 discs just fine, but not DVD-R's, the disc does just a little quarter turn. This is typical of a laser that is worn out. The DVD side sounds like it had gone but the CD side is still well enough to read the disc.
