I have a V9 PS2 which started showing disc read error, so I got a new ps2 laser a HD7 one, but the ps2 still says DRE. I've got my friend to try it in his ps2 and it works fine. Also my ps2 doesn't spin the disk, it will only spin if you spin it and shut the door quickly, otherwise you shut the door, it comes up reading disc for a sec then dissappears. Why isnt the disc spinning? maybe if i sort this problem out the DRE might be easier to solve. I once sat there for 2 hours getting the disc the spin, then adjusting both white cogs in the ps2, then spinning the disc, adjusting the white cogs and so on. Please help, any help.

im presuming the sony logos come up and all that when you load a game/something? if the new laser you got works but doesnt work on yours, its most likely that your LA chip in the ps2 fried and could also have burnt up your first laser. i guess stop trying to see if games read bc you new laser could burn out too. V9 and v10 have a tendency to do it. dunno if you or your installer did the ROMEO mod. i didnt know about the romeo mod until i got disc read errors. i havent installed my replacement la chip since it hasnt come in yet but damn, it looks like a bitch to install. i think we're in the same bout dude.
hope this helps

i have a thread started specifically that had a link referring to V9/V10 in this forum

Sounds very similar to phoball's problem, and I have a v9 like this as well.

Phoball - update your other thread when you get the LA chip replaced. I think I'm going to see if a LA replacement would fix my other system.

The Romeo mod is recommended for any v9/10 PS2. The laser burning out occurs more often with modded systems, but it can still happen regardless.

If you do have a burned out LA chip (since no Romeo mod), you'll have to replace that as well. I've not replaced one myself, but from what I've heard they are not fun to do. I'd highly recommend getting the help of a professional, or scrapping the whole project and buying another PS2.

It might not be anything to do with your LA chip being fried, what laser did you remove from the system? I have a V9 thats laser fried, had a KHS-400C (I think) in it and I tried to put a perfectly fine working HD7 laser in it. It worked fine a few times but then it would just load up saying that there was a disc in the drive, upon selecting the disc I would get disc read error. That HD7 laser still works perfect in another V9 and I got hold of another KHS-400C for my main one.

I've seen 400C's and HD7 lasers in v9 and v7 systems, so you can't be certain just because of the model.

oh sod it, I think i'll just get another ps2 altogether but not a V9 or 10 :D What version would you recommend? and how would I recognise them by the look? I know some have 12 screws some have 8, V9 upwards have an infared laser between the power button, and the SCPH no. is the most obvious difference. so, what version would you say? thanks.

A version 5 or 7 would be fine. SCPH-39001, 35001, 30001

Version 9/10 systems are find as long as you do the Romeo mod.

That's right. 400B lasers are considered inferior to 400C lasers. You can swap one for the other with no problems.
