I, like everyone else here am looking for the fastest dvd's for the cheapest price. I keep reading about Ritek in this forum. I have purchased 25 TDK's 2x for a little over $55.00, (Best Buy)but have not had any bad experience with these. I have not been able to find a 4x for TDK's and if I did, I'm sure the price would be a lot more. The ? I have is that I've read that you can't get 4x for the Sony drives. I have the Sony DW-U12A internal +/- burner. I have read that for the pioneers you have to download the latest firmware, is there a download for the Sony drives to achieve the 4X. What 4x brand is recommended for Sony and where?

Depending most on your drive and on the batch of discs, you may or may be not able to get 4x speed with Ritek G04 -R discs. However, there are some positive experiences obtaining 4x speed with Riteks on the net. For ppl with problems, it seems that updating the firmware didn't help, so if I were you I wouldn't go for that.
These discs are not on the list of certified media for Sony drives.
I think you could try 4x +R discs with Ricoh dye (the vast majority of +R discs on the market today). Ricoh discs are on the certified media list for Sony drives.

I've been happy with the -R disks. I have seen a price difference between + disks and the - disks. Especially at Besy buy and Sams clubs. Why the difference?

I'll always be -R until the HD DVD comes out.
Anyway, Firmware upgrades are usually a good thing if they are RPC 1. THis means the DVD Writer will be region free allowing unlimited rips of regioned DVD's, different to its original settings.

"Firmware upgrades are usually a good thing if they are RPC 1", Where do I find the upgrade for the Sony DVD burner (mine came with my Sony Vaio (DW-U12A). The links you sent were for a pioneer.

OK, so no firmware upgrade for Sony DVD burners. What is the best -R for the price and where do I get it.

I have not had a lot luck with any of the ritek DVD-R. I have had the G03 and G04. Used with Pioneer A04 and Sony 500 drives. Just about everytime I burn a movie the last 10 minutes get really distorted. I have used Apple (2 and 4X), Princo 1x both with very little issue. I personally will stay away from the Riteks.

flanman:
I used to get the outer edge error when using the Ritek G03 at X2 on f/w 1.31[2xritek4all] burning w/ Nero Burning Rom 5.5.10.20 so finally took up the reigns of RecordNow DX (no matter how much I loathed to)
Even tho I have RecordNow DX set to burn speed of X1 it burns at X2 cos it takes 30 mins for a full 4.36Gb [4450mb]
Strangely enough , even tho RecordNow DX forces my burner to go at max (cos I have the Pioneer DVR-104 too) it still comes out as a successful burn.
90% of Ritek G03 have behaved so far , so I'm well pleased. The 10% failure is cos I've only done about 25 or so with RecordNow Deluxe and the 3 that have failed where 3hr laserdisc copies...hhmmm ;-)
I duuno what your burning with cos you didnt state it , but there's my experience
