My ps2 version 30001 laser is broken. It will not read the disc at all. the red light on the laser does not even come on. I don't even get disc read error. And the disc spins for a split second and then stops. I'm wondering if its because the laser is broken that the disc stops spinning right away. Would I be waisting my money if I bought a new laser?

depends. A new laser is about $50
Plus shipping it off and having it installed of course.

You can get a refurbished one at a game store(if they have them) for about $99

Or you can save up and buy a premodded console with a good mod chip in it for $220

Well I definitely wouldn't pay 50 dollars for a lens. Maybe if I found one for less than 30 I'd risk it. What exactly is the mod chip and why is it so expensive?

well, a mod chip is something that gets soldered onto the PS2 motherboard. And they are more expensive because they are much better than swap magic and take more technology then simply pressing out a DVD to make them.
With a quality modchip installed in your PS2 you are pretty much set up to do whatever the PS2 is capable of.
For example with yours (V5/6) you could install and run an internal IDE hard drive. Running games from that rather than a disc saves laser life, discs won't get damaged, and has faster load times on your games.
You can also play DVD9 (dual layer) back up games, something that Swap Magic can not do.
You will not have to patch or rebuild any games, unlike Swap Magic
You will not have any screen cut off when playing games from other regions, unlike Swap Magic.
You can use ELF (homebrew) application
and i am sure a few other great things i am forgetting but i think you get my point. The key is the word QUALITY mod chip.
