Ok ....

out of the blue I'm watching a XviD of My name is Earl and I notice that i am getting a wierd "Splitting" effect on the picture. I expand the vid to fill the screen anf the quality is very jerky and low.

I tried to play it in other media players insteasd of WMP9, but got the same thing. Also a full screen image in powerdvd is jery and low quality too.

Any hunches?

chances are that the video is corrupted or something. its happend to me before too

I don't think so. It's the same on every AVI I have then! I'm sure it's just a tweak somewhere.
