I was reading through several newsgroups and forums, and I got different opinions on this topic. Here is my concret question. I am trying to make a backup of my Video DVDs. I am mainly using DVDShrink on a PC for ripping and the ImgTools for creating an image of the DVD. The DVD image runs just fine with my PC software player. Since I don't have a DVD writer in my PC but in my Powerbook, I would like to burn it on the Mac. My question is can I do it somehow with the OSX tools, or do I have to get Roxio Toast. I read that some guy did copies of non protected DVDs with the Disc Copy utility, but will it also work with my image? Due to the high prices of DVD-Rs I don't just want to try it, and make the same mistakes that other already did. Is anybody able to give me a concrete answer? I would appreciate any help you guys can offer.
I am not sure why everybody here is using Toast. I just refuse to pay $100 for software when I can do the job with freeware. In my case I ripped and shrunk a DVD with DVDShrink. I know it is a PC tool, but it works just fine. Then I used ImgTool Classic again on the PC to make a image file of my VIDEO_TS folder. This program is a frontend for mkisofs. If you don't like using PC tools, then MissingMediaBurner should do the same job as ImgTool Classic, since it is also a front end for mkisofs. The resulting image you can burn to a DVD using MissingMediaBurner, or if you DVD writer does not seem to be supported, as mine isn't, use the Disc Copier that comes with your Mac OS X. I tried the resulting DVD in my Powerbook, my XBox and a generic standalone Player, works everywhere just fine. So if somebody like me does not want to pay money for Toast, this will work just fine. If you are restricted to the Mac, then you probably need to get OSEX and DVD2OneX to accomplish what DVDShrink does for the PC.
